Things you won't find anymore...

And remember these simple and sturdy devices from shoe stores of the past actually used to measure the length and width of your feet? This was especially important for children's feet where they were growing. Now almost a flea market or museum item...

I have one that I believe my husband got from his parents when they passed.

I wish I could turn back the clock and experience again that time when chrome and horsepower ruled the streets, All kinds of hot rods rolled like thunder. Engines roared, windows down, radios blasting rock 'n' roll out of 6x9 Jensons.

Boys had sleeves rolled up just right. Girls wore miniskirts, go-go boots, and some teased their hair to the sky.

Weekends were a sacred time. You’d find the gang at diners, drive-ins, concerts, or just hanging out under the stars.

Elvis, Dylan, beach boys, The Beatles, Janis Joplin and more owned the airwaves. I'd love to surround myself with the things and people that made me happy, and stay there forever!

Here's something you don't see these days, a pencil sharpener. Maybe the schools still have them but when I was a kid almost every house had one mounted somewhere. Ours was mounted on the wall at the bottom of the stairs, which was also where our phone was and we kept our trash.lol

When I lived in our big house, we had one of those pencil sharpeners mounted on a shelf by the steps that lead to the basement. The former owners were school teachers.
We also had the sharpeners in school when I was young.
I have tried several other pencil sharpeners, they do not as work well. I miss the older one.

I do not have much use for a pencil sharpener now, I use blue pens.
I do like to draw using colored pencils. If I need a pencil sharpened I use one of my Sons old hand sharpeners he used in school. It takes some practice to use them properly.

I too recall ushers in nice theaters in the 1950s, but they've gone the way of the Dodo bird.

I've heard that movie theaters make more money from their concession stands than from their ticket prices. That would explain why the snacks are so expensive-- like at an airport...

And we'd often sneak in a little snack in my wife's purse...
In 1965 I was a trainee manager for Odeon Cinemas here in Toronto. One of the many facts that I learned was that the highest profit makers were popcorn and soft drinks, followed by chocolate bars. In those days, we managers wore tuxedos in the evening time period, and business suits during the day shift. The theatre that I worked at was a 1200 seat facility, with a double balcony above the main floor.

On Saturday afternoons, we had "kids shows" that featured a couple of cartoons, a main feature, and a serial ( usually a western cowboy film). For that Saturday afternoon, we had 3 older ladies who wore white dresses, whose job it was to try to control the ankle biters. The ladies were called "Matrons" and they didn't put up with much nonsense from the kids.

On some Saturdays Odeon would bring in a "stage act " usually a couple of young adults who did tricks with Yoyo's or the Whamo paddle toys. After the show was over, they would set up in the lobby, to try to sell those toys to the Parents of the kids in the theatre.

The longest running film during my short career with Odeon was the first Beatle's movie " A Hard Days Night " . It ran for 9 weeks, at 4 selected Odeon Cinemas in Toronto. Every Monday morning I walked 3 blocks to the local branch of the Bank Of Montreal, carrying the past week's cash receipts in a brown paper bag. I was 19 years old. No one thought that was unusual at all. JIMB>

I do colour by number art work, using Kalour pencils from Germany. The standard set contains 72 pencils, and a nice sharpener. The pencils are super high quality, and not cheap, but a set of 72 has lasted me for over 3 years, so far. The sharpener is very well made ( it is German after all ) and it will probably out live ME.
