Where did Marmite come from? Some sort of byproduct of brewing beer?

Yes. Marmite and Vegemite are made from the lees (by products) of brewing.
Marmite uses Barley, Oats and Rye.
Vegemite uses Wheat and Barley

Another similar product is BONOX. Has anyone tried it? If I run out of Vegemite I use is on my Toast, but it does make a lovely broth in a mug.
