Thinking about switching from partials to full dentures

About 15 years ago, I got a set of partial dentures. Upper and lower. Include all front teeth, and some side. Do not have many original teeth left. Not long ago, one of my original teeth broke off. I am thinking now I would like to go in and have the rest of my teeth removed and get full dentures. My husband did it about the same time I originally got my partials, and he loved it.
Has anyone else done this? Tooth issues run in my moms side of family. She had dentures (someday I will tell the story of when my nephew, at age 3 saw her take out her teeth :)), I have made a consultation appt for next week. I want to check the pricing, of course, and how many visits. I want to do it, just have to figure when I can financially do it.

I used to have partial lower dentures but the post teeth eventually needed to be removed. I went to a full lower denture with a Hader bar to hold the denture securely in place. The Hader bar was expensive but it has worked great for the last 20 years. Now the Hader bar is failing and I need to have it removed. My concern with a traditional lower denture is that there is not much to hold it in place without using some sort of over the counter fixative.

I also have a traditional upper denture that stays in place fine without using a fixative but it also has the roof of my mouth for support.

Good luck and please keep us posted with the results of your research.

i have full dentures. they take getting used to. i've needed new ones for a long time but didn't have much luck with the same day dental place. it's nice not having to go to the dentist anymore.

I’ve posted before about my successful experience with dentures. The secret is to have a Denturist who will work with you until you feel the fit is really perfect and comfortable, and that may take several visits; someone you can go back to if things feel different after a couple of months. I use a denture adhesive & I can’t bite into apple skins or corn on the cob. But otherwise fine

I have uppers and lowers and hate them!!! But I will survive...
I hear you. I am no longer crazy about my partials, as my anchor teeth are worn and or broken. So, I figure rather than a new set of partials, I am going for the full thing.
Not sure if full will be different, but I broke off a couple teeth from my partial eating corn on the cob. My husband switched from partials to full, and loved the change. But everyone tolerates them differently I guess.

Eventually I will need dentures as my teeth are in bad shape with having gum disease. It's good to hear everyone's thoughts on them so I know the ins and outs about them.

I got a full upper denture about 3 years ago. Was dreading it. I found a great dentist, which is vital. After a couple of visits to prepare, out with the few old teeth I had left and in with the new denture. First denture was considered a temporary one and then about a year later I got fitted for a new better made denture. I really had no problems at all. I don't even need adhesive. Worst part was the 'unknown' before doing it!

mine have never fit right.

@New2Old what do you mean he didn't skimp on prep? what did he do that was any different?
Well, I don't know what he did that was different, as this was my only experience, but what I mean is that he spent a long time making sure the impressions he took were spot on and when the actual denture was put in, he spent quite a bit of time making sure it fit perfectly by grinding spots, refitting, grinding again, etc.

My husband went to full dentures, much better then the partials according to him. He “glues” them in.

When I fell a couple of years ago, I broke a tooth and it had to be removed. Other than that I still have all my teeth. Last time I saw my mother she asked me about my teeth. I told her I still had them all (which I did then).

Imagine my surprise when she walked over to me, grabbed my face, and insisted I open my mouth so she could see that I really had my own teeth. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Yup, that’s my mother. I’m 73, I think they will last till the end.

they didn't do all that crap with me. we have shoddy docs here anyway.
