This Day in History Thread has become personal

I hadn't noticed it was a diary thread because I'd picked it up from the side panel and was just adding to the conversation of the moment. Anyway I deleted my post afterward. Now I try not to say anything on the diary threads, just read, and or occasionally add likes.
Oooh, I didn't even know there was a rule (written or unwritten) about length of replies on the diaries! I read a number of them and generally don't say anything at all because I was never sure if replies are welcomed... and 80% of the time I even forget to hit a "like"... but I do read them.

I’m against closing old threads, yet feel it’s better if a new one is started.
I'm against it, too... especially things that won't age like music threads, and medical/health things. I've looked up health & wellness issues to see if they've been discussed before starting a thread, and sure enough, I usually find the answers I was seeking.

What I don't like is starting a thread and being scolded with "there's already a thread about that" because often it's very old and half of the people responding disappeared years ago. I can't see that it matters if something's been done before... I like seeing the fresh responses as well as the old.

It's just good manners and common courtesy to respect a thread
someone has put up. I know how moviequeen feels.
When I started the thread 'Things British" ... a gaggle of trouble makers
insisted on spoiling things (they know who they are).

I have never reported anyone but someone might have or Matrix may
have seen their inane comments and removed them...thank you Matrix.
Respect is the key word here.

When I first arrived I was curious, and a bit skeptical, of why @moviequeen1 was so protective of this thread. After getting to know her, it doesn't matter anymore. She matters. MQ is a lovely, gracious person. If wanting to keep her thread as she imagines is what she wants, that's what she gets.
Hi Pepper, thanks so much for your kind words, appreciate it Sue aka MQ

If someone invites me into his/her garden/house do I rubbish it? - certainly not -do I ask questions and make comments - hmmmm yes - if I am asked an opinion from the owner do I give it - I give an opinion but it will be tempered with good restraint - elsewhere - different story!! ps: if I have broken this dictum - my apologizes to all!

I was replying to post 49, @RadishRose ... about being jumped on for a long response in a diary. That's why I said "unwritten" too, because I assumed it was maybe a "hall monitor" scolding the poster and not an actual rule here. But since it did happen, I made a mental note to keep it in mind. :)
Hey Kate. I wondered the same thing. I took what Gary said as being a forum rule when in actuality he was just being sarcastic about a personal situation we both know nothing about. Matrix fixed the problem though.
I think someone unfairly criticized his journal writing style. ( in HIS journal )🤷‍♀️

No, it wasn't that. It was post 49. @PeppermintPatty Who on earth would criticize someone's writing style?! (Don't answer that!) @Gary O' has a delighful way of writing whether it's a diary entry or a regular post.

Oh I’m sorry. Screwed up again.
Gary mentioned that he didn’t know journals could only last one year . I personally enjoy reading Gary’s posts. They are thorough and interesting in my opinion. Delightful , yes! 👍

Many forums have a Today in History thread and so far as I have seen they are always for things that happened in the world on the date listed. People are invited to comment on those events or post other events from the past but not their own personal history and certainly not stupid jokes deliberately meant to take a thread off topic.

I've seen those crass jokes or comments in very serious threads as well, even in mental health or other posts about serious events. In some forums they would be deleted and the poster would be admonished. It's not always jokers that deliberately take threads off topic. There are others, some innocently, some not.

I haven't read any of the diary threads but the discussion on them has been helpful.

@moviequeen1 ,
I read years back about a woman who clipped news articles and put them together in a way that she could see patterns and even correctly predict events.
Since you've been posting the This Day in History thread have you noticed any unusual patterns?
