yes that's the sort of thing that used to happen in some homes before cages were invented.. and also sometimes the letterbox would be so wide..( without draught proof brushes).. that a postmen would inadvertently put his fingers through with the mail, and often get bitten..

Now with much more modern letterboxes, with draught proof brushes, and with the cages.. the mail and the postie are both safe from pets.. and anyone who fancies putting a firework through..

Sounded like a good idea until I thought about it - USPS stuffs large packages in my mailbox, so it wouldn't work here. /-;
I have the roadside 'country' mail box - You know, the ones that the snow plows knock over every winter!

In Canada, we had those until there was too much theft. Things were being fished out. Gear was used to unlock the inside door lock. City folks were told to put a box outside by the front door. Still could have theft but it was more visible. Also it made it faster for the mail person to stick the mail in the box rather than dealing with a small slot.
Then to save money, all new subdivisions went to community mail boxes.
Then the thieves were breaking into those or pulling them up and taking the whole thing away.

No problem if they want pry them open. Even the cameras don’t slow them down. They just put on hats so they’re harder to recognize. Often they live in the complex.

My friend had to set up a special box to stop her dog from eating the mail.

Our community box has been pried open twice. Now it has an even more secure locking device, until the thieves find away around that. We basically get anything we can online. It’s a rare week that we get anything besides junk mail or a couple of magazines.

There’s big potential for the thieves with mail theft. My DIL had an unsolicited, pre-approved Credit Card. They got it and it was only by chance she found it was stolen and they were racking up big bills in her name. The CC companies finally smartened up and quit sending those.

The delivery guy will leave extra newspapers laying around trying to get new business I think.
The only time I've seen someone take one of those extras is a woman who puts paper on the bottom of her bird cage.

RE reporting: For two nights, the area on the site that lists people online won't show people who are currently posting, or at least once last night. Tonight, I was showing as online, regardless I hadn't signed in. Please keep in mind, when I say late at night the notice might have been during wee hours of the morning.

I think members can turn off the thing that shows they're online.

When I came to the site to sign in, I could view the area that shows who is online. I haven't looked for that area before tonight, so I don't know if that only happened tonight.

Very few people get newspapers delivered anymore - it's usually those that don't have computers I think.

These are the type of mail boxes my daughter has for her business, and they work well, except for packages that have been literally left in the hallway. /-;
 
Well, what are the cops supposed to do? Arrest a guy for being "strange"? And Jeni, you were just as near the pile of mail as he was, does that make you the guilty party? So, exactly, who are the cops going to arrest? There's rape, robbery, and murder and someone rifling the mail, which crime would you devote your resources?

IN the UK most apartment blocks have these types of communal mailboxes .. but theft is high in many..

Years ago the postmen would put mail through the letterboxes in every apartment on every floor regardless of how many floors. Obviously that became unsustainable, so those types of mailboxes are installed in most apartment blocks to make it easier fro the postal service.. but it leaves people's pretty easily accessed by thieves ..

I don't know how most people do their business, but I find these days that 99.9% of the mail I receive in my mailbox is junk! ... and catalogs, advertising, etc. Nothing of any significance anyway.

Today's a pretty big day, though. I'm leaving in about an hour to get my eye looked at by an ophthalmology specialist to rule out anything obvious before a bunch of diagnostic imaging next week, and then my nephew's funeral is this afternoon. But this kind of stuff is just part of life, right? Few people get through it without a few challenges.

That reminds me of an unnerving incident from my college days 50+ years ago. A couple of men followed me into the building late at night. When I finally got back into my apartment and felt safe I heard a noise; there was a stream of light across the hallway where someone was looking in my mail slot. My corded phone was on the other side of the hall. Felt like forever that I stood there waiting for him to leave.

The reason bad guys lurk and peek and tippy-toe is because they're scared. Scared, not scary. Next time, with as much threat and aggressiveness as you can muster, yell out "Get the f*** outta here, azz-hole!" I can guarantee you, he'll scurry off like the scared little rat he is, eyes bulging, bulge shrinking.
