  • "Hundreds of thousands" of migratory birds are dropping dead across the Southwest in what scientists are calling the largest mass die-off in recent history.
  • Scientists first began investigating the phenomenon in late August after numerous reports of clusters of dead birds found in states including New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and Nebraska.
  • Some witnesses had seen the birds displaying unusual behavior before their deaths, including becoming lethargic or fearless when humans approached them.
  • Scientists are unsure why this mass die-off is happening, but have addressed several factors including climate change and the ongoing wildfires as possible reasons for the deaths.....read on....:(

I just read this somewhere else...so very sad. Poor birdies can't take smoke..they don't have lungs but small air sacs that are very delicate.

I'm here in NM and I haven't seen any dead birds -- doesn't mean there aren't any, just that I haven't seen any. My more-or-less resident roadrunner is still doing his/her usual roadrunning with usual speed and enthusiasm. He/she takes issue with neighborhood cats and I frequently see cats being chased out of my yard by said roadrunner. This is fine with me, since the neighborhood cats seem to have decided part of my front yard is their personal litterbox.

I'm convinced nothing is more ignorant than the human race!

Saw that reported last week ... so sad.

I can attest to how bad the smoke is and has been. Now imagine, you are a bird flying through it and have no idea where to go or what to do. The particulates are impossible to avoid. There is poison in that smoke from the human created chemicals that burned in structures, cars and the like. It's horrible what we have done to these birds because of what we didn't do to protect the environment in the 1970s when the information first came out. We could have made a big impact. We had another chance in the 1990s when Al Gore's book came out. So now the birds, the ocean wildlife and living beings everywhere are dying because of us. Us. It's unconscionable.

Wow! This reminds me of scenes from a sci fi movie I just watched. When you see these things in movies, it doesn't seem like it could really happen but once again....science fiction becomes science fact. Very sad situation.
