Time for a new bed!

Hubs and I weren't going to concern ourselves with a new bed until fall, but we're both done with the old. It's served us well and paid for itself in spades, however, the time has come to say goodbye to the old and hello to new.

We want (need) something firm, have no idea about brands, etc.

Will be going shopping for one over the weekend, so if you have ideas, experiences with, have any recommendations, I'm all ears.

A couple weeks ago,I bought a Spring Air full firm mattress at local mattress store
I knew it was time for a new one had it for 15 yrs,was sagging in the middle
One thing I notice the mattress was a bit higher than my old one, took me a couple days to get use to it, been very pleased. For $20 extra, the guys took my old mattress

Very nice hearing from you all!

I'm taking all in that you speak of and have a slip of paper that all will be noted on for reference when we're out and about shopping.

We have two places on our radar that's we'll be checking out, and we're really hoping we can come home with something.

Our old bed dates back to the 90's, and is done.

I am so looking forward to sleeping on something new, something firm, something up-to-date.

JMO, don’t buy one that needs flipping & rotating on a regular basis.

I can’t remember the brand we have. It’s made in Canada, purchased at the Bay. It is dual-sided, like used to be the standard. It cost twice as much as the single side type.

The flipping wasn’t so bad a few years ago, now DH has problems manoeuvring it and I’m not much of an assistant.

We tried out a very deep mattress, very deep price and were very turned off by the need to rotate it every month to maintain the warranty. Watch for that clause.

My DD bought the two single Temperpedic with all the bells and whistles. Her husband has a bad back & sleeps hot. She freezes. It looks like a single king. $$$$ but worth it for them. If only it had a device that stopped his snoring.

Over here the bed companies were running commercials
on TV, before the lockdowns began, they have decided
that a bed should be changed, "Every Eight Years", that
is what I call "Pressure Sales" and a load of bunk! ;)

Mike.
I agree, a load of bunk that is!

I'm not going to lie about it, our bed has needed replacing for quite some time now, but it sure didn't need it after 8 years.

You could always try the Firminator!

Excellent pointers, Jules.

The flipping thing I am done with. I can handle spinning the mattress though, that's fine.

I was reading up on mattresses a little last night, and came across a mattress that helps keep you cooler. Hubby and I are both hot sleepers so we'll be inquiring about the special cooling topper, but not to the tune of $600-$800 extra.

I'm not looking forward to prices, because if my memory serves me correctly, we paid in and around $1200 for our bed set back in the 90's, which was a lot of money for us at the time, so we're already bracing ourselves for a $1500-$2000 hit. Don't want to go much above that.

I need a new one as well. My current is a Beautyrest pillow top. I didn't like the pillowtop shortly after it was worn so I don't like them.

I would get a firm also. We have a great store here in Cleveland called Mattress Factory where I once got an excellent mattress and box spring set from. I recommend a place like that and their prices are very reasonable. I may go back to them.

We once tried to collect on a warranty on a less than 1 year old Stearns & Foster mattress. We faithfully flipped this thing as directed. The sags that measured about 1-1 1/2 inches in depth and did effect comfort. Both the mattress company and the retailer claimed it to be normal wear wear and not covered. This was over 20 years ago but, when it came time to get another mattress we didn't even concern ourselves with warranties and bought from a local manufacturer.

You & hubby discuss it while lying on it. Many people are shy about lying on the mattresses for an extended period of time. Also, don't forget mattress toppers. My topper is fantastic but I have no brand name for it. Good luck.

Really appreciate hearing from everyone on this!

Current bedding will fit, but will need a new mattress pad.

I like to think some of the minor aches and pains we wake with from time to time will go away with a comfy new mattress, and it's my understanding that today's firm mattresses provide a much cooler sleep compared to older firm mattresses.

We're going to get an early start on Saturday morning and I'll post on what we settle on.

If you haven’t replaced yours in a long time, you’ll be surprised how much they’ve changed. They’re thin, fitted like a sheet and designed to be water resistant.
It's been a really long time, Jules, like way back to the early 90's, as embarrassed as I am to admit it.

Sleep Country charged $$ for theirs. Ours came free with our over-priced mattress and it’s guaranteed for ten years for rips etc. They will replace it twice.

I can't say enough about Select Comfort/Sleep Number bed. Had it since 2006 and inflates on both sides. I'm thinking about upgrading to the new one. I have degenerative disc disease and it's the best one I've ever had. I don't need all the bells & whistles unless it's on sale!
I agree. We've had ours too since 2005 or 2006. Select Comfort / Sleep Number bed. Split King with adjustable frame. I can't believe the way the prices went up on them. My Sleep Number: 55 / My Wife Sleep Number: 65.
