I think it's at least 6 months or more since I last did a price comparison.... so today as we all have Costco in our Universal countries I thought I'd take some pictures of prices, mainly of meat and fish.. and compare with you all ..

Just to be clear .. you will see on our price tags ( no Vat included).. VAT = Value Added Tax.. which is not included in the price of food in the UK
For those who don't know... 1 KG = 2.2 pounds
Also.. Todays' currency exchange rate is UK £1 .... = $1.15 US .... £1 = $1.53 Canadian ... £1 = $1.71 AUS

I'm almost finished reading, "The China Study" by T. Colin Campbell. In a nutshell, he says that heart attacks and strokes are caused by eating meat in wealthy countries. In countries where people eat mostly fruit, vegetables and grains, there are much fewer heart attacks and strokes. Bad news for meat eaters and lovers of dairy products. Don't argue with me! Argue with T. Colin Campbell.

@hollydolly Since I don't pay for the groceries and DD doesn't even look at the prices, I don't know how they compare, but...I think the price of beef lends new meaning to the exclamation "Holy Cow!"

The lines of people waiting to check out look like the lines at Sam's Club on the rare occasions when I go there with DD. It always looks like we're expecting The Storm of the Century.

Yes as you can see Meat is very expensive.. but in Costco's defence the beef is top quality Scottish Beef from Angus cattle... meat generally can be bought cheaper in other supermarkets.. not so independent Butchers tho'.. whose prices are now very high...

Don't have a Costco nearby, so I looked up the price of rib eye in Salt Lake online. The high end cut is $279.99 for 12 pounds, or $23.33 per pound. Sale tax not included. If I did the conversion right your rib eye is $14.63 per pound. I am surprised yours is cheaper.

The rib eye in my pictures.. are £16.23 per pound... which is $18.72 US at todays exchange rate... and no tax we don't tax food

We don’t pay tax on most foods either. The exception is junk food. There’s a tax on one donut; none on a dozen. This may be out of date because I don’t buy donuts.

It’s been a while since I went to Costco and rarely buy meat there. If I do, it’s a pork tenderloin. There’s a blogger who posts photos of the Costco sales every Monday. It makes shopping for their specials much easier.

Do you have self-checkouts in the UK now? Now matter how long the line, Costco is efficient.

we've had self checkouts in the UK for decades.. but not at Costco...

@hollydolly, thanks for the warning. I soldiered through the photos LOL.

Your prices aren't dissimilar to ours. Meat, fish and other animal products have skyrocketed here, too. Disclosure: This week I actually bought a $4.99 Costco cooked rotisserie chicken for the first time since going plant-based 8.5 years ago. o_O (Fingers crossed it will help with training our new dog. I froze most of the meat in treat-sized pieces so it should last him a while.)

When seeing the escalation in prices, I truly worry about how people will manage if they center their meals around animal products. If ever there were a time for people to consider going mostly meatless...

California also doesn't tax foods with a few exceptions, notably hot prepared foods and carbonated beverages.

In the uk we don't add sales tax to anything at the till. VAT is already added to everything, other than food and a whole list of other goods which you will see on this link...
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/rates-of-vat-on-different-goods-and-services

So.. the price you see is the price you pay..no nasty shocks when it comes to paying the Bill
I like your system better. What you see is what you pay.

Sales tax is 9.5% in my area so I mentally add 10% to the cost.

These Beef Burgers were £7. and change...

Is your beef rated by percentage of fat? Where I shop, I can by 80%. 85%. 90% and 93% lean beef. The higher the number, the higher the price. It goes from $4.55 per lb. for 80% to $5.90 per lb. for 93%. I bought 4 prepared beef pattie’s at 4 ozs. each and 90%. They were “on sale” for $4.50 per pack of 4. That’s a deal anywhere. I only eat red meat once a week. I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables and chicken and fish. I make great cod fillets. I also try to drink 60 ozs. of water every day.
