Times Square in New York City

I have memories of Fourth of July sardine cans in the local city. It was especially bad at the end of the event ... shuffling feet a few inches at a time, for a long time. Then the worst traffic jams ever.

So a million people plan on doing this tonight.

🤔

I've done the Times Square thing 3 times. Way back in the 70s, in order to get into Times Square, you had to get there by 8PM- today 8AM. Otherwise, you have to stand further on up Broadway- sometimes, way, way up. I was there when the temp was in the teens (-12C), but there are so many warm bodies, it was OK. At midnight, there are a million standing there. Unbelievably by 12:15, they are all gone. I'd do it again.

Remember when Times Square was leased primarily by Hookers, Peep Shows and rip off Junk Stores? I do. I'd rather have Disney Land.
Of course, when I was a 14yo sheltered kid from Yonkers prowling around Manhattan TS was an eye opener. A couple summers later I was working over night shifts at Hunts Point in the S Bronx so I needed some seasoning before that. Now it's just tourists and Appleby's. yuck

My problem with Times Square is that it is always mobbed with people. I like the tourists. So, you are from Yonkers. Know nothing of Yonkers though I've passed thru, on Metro North, a million times. Looks nice from the train.

Yonkers- "the city of hills, where nothing is on the level". Yonkers was pretty rugged, although a few nice parts, but crime, poverty, and despair were always close by.

I was born on Staten Island and lived there till I was 5, then the Jersey shore, finally Yonkers which I escaped at 17 to go to college in Idaho in 1975.
