Tipping Fast Food?

I am seeing now that fast food restaurants (like Subway) are integrating a TIP function, even calculating a 15% tip! I have always tipped at 15% or 20% at a regular restaurant, but I find this new practice laughable. I am guessing it is more an excuse to lower wages. And at a candy store, where we paid $18 for two pre-made caramel apples, I got a nasty glare for not tipping!

..absolutely agree.. here we just tap the order into a machine ,and then wait for the number to be called... where you collect at the Counter...( Maccy Dees... always , and some others) ..or of course the drive in....
then afterwards you dispose of your tray or your own rubbish.....so having paid for the service of having the food cooked, what on earth can they be hoping to be tipped for ?
 

We just went to a nice sit-down restaurant Wednesday. The waitress was very nice & took great care of us. They have those "pay-now" thingie sitting on each table or booth. The food was great, nice & hot, she kept our nonalcoholic drinks filled.

When I tapped pay now it showed the whole bill of $37.52 & my military discount. The speedometer showed a 15% tip or $5.63 total. I moved it over to give her a $100.00 tip for Christmas. She was so happy. Normally I move it to 20%
 
That was really nice of you @Tom 86 You really made her month.

If I call ahead and order for pickup, my tip is 10%.

McD’s, etc I no longer tip since I’ve ordered and paid at a machine when I ordered.

I resent seeing a suggestion on the CC machine total for a % tip or a tip jar at places like a bakery shop, liquor store, etc. People who pay with cash will often throw in their change. Since our $1 and $2 are coins, you can see significant amounts in there.

Yes, and hold the tip.
I hate the practice of tipping. It's a job, not a charity. People shouldn't have to rely on another's generosity to earn a living wage. And if you don't like the service, or the food; you get up and walk out. You don't gobble it down, and then stiff the hired help.

Our McDee's here pay their help $18.00 an hr. Course there are only a couple of people in there the rest is done with robots.

I never go there as their food has changed from worse to BAD I have friends that their kids don't even like to go there only for the french fries.
 
Man Alive! Another Millellenial Rip-off; forced tipping. Reading this post by Michael Z makes me very happy that I do not go to restaurants. Tipping used to be for good service. Now it's being forced on people. I suppose a "fool and his money are quickly parted." I'm not Scrooge and I used to tip well when my wife was alive but forced tipping really gets my dandruff up. I make a great effort not to tip when they try to force me. That is just bad business practice. Humbug!
 
The only Fast Food place I tip is Sonic....they have good burgers and I like eating in my car when I'm in town doing my 'pickups'. I'm sure the young people that work there appreciate tips.
 
Yes, for sure I would tip those that deliver pizza or whatever as they usually do so with their own vehicle and the wages, whatever they may be, do not make up for destroying their vehicle with all the stop and go driving. That is quite different from stuffing a burger in a sack. Likewise, in many states (like ours), the minimum wage for those waiting on tables is far lower since they receive tips. So I always tip the waitress or waiter in a regular restaurant. I am wondering if the Subway's are now paying that lower wage?

And remember that tipping works both ways. I always tip my local car guy, which is not something many do. TiresPlus says it will be weeks before they can put tires on. My local guy says drive in any time and he will change them while I wait.

Not me! We have too much tipping now, and its being built into pay scales, employers are paying less assuming there will be tipping. I do not want to encourage that.

However where I know it is the case I tip well, like to waitresses or waiters in a restaurant. I don't like it, but don't want the wait staff to suffer.

I have had a few people turn down tips. I got really good help loading my truck from a Home Depot employee a few weeks ago, he refused to take any tip. Surprised me, he deserved it.

Tipping should be for something special, not routinely expected...
 
I tip helpful people and usually ignore jars.

These days it’s more likely to be someone that has helped me with heavy items or high tech problems.

The last tip was for the young man that came to haul away a load of donations from my apartment.
 
I particularly don't like paying a tip at the counter before I even get my food.
What if they mess up the order or the food isn't good? It happens.
But if I don't add the tip when ordering then they may do something nasty to my food 😬
