My decoy pkg - someone took the bait, kinda.

They opened the box, apparently saw what was in it and/or read my note, and left the box. Odd.

Must have had a box cutter because the tape I used is strong. I thought they would grab the box and run/drive away. Anyway, I took the box to the trash dumpster.

Now they're checking the packages! Holy cow. Well, at least you sent the message.

We're fortunate that our condo has a security desk where packages are dropped off and held for us.

When we were in a house, there was only one incidence of theft .. and I suspect the regular delivery guy of taking the parcel that was part of the Wizard of Oz collection. He seemed to know exactly which pieces he was delivering, and it was the nicest of the lot .. Glenda, the Good Witch. The guy always seemed spaced-out.

Saw a thng on the news last night. Amazon is working with police in some areas. They are setting up stings with dummy packages on front steps , monitored with those doorbell cams at headquarters. Packages have GPS chips installed. They have caught a few already. Hey..did you see the one the other day where a little kid was sent to the porch to grab the boxes?

We know from email the day a package is to arrive but NO deliverer, ever leaves a note, or even rings the the doorbell. They just toss and leave.

I think this 2 day delivery puts too much pressure on...is it really that big a deal to wait 3 or 4 days?

We have good neighbor's...If they see a package on our porch they wouldn't touch it, if only we are not home for a while...My friend across the street would get the package and put it in her closed porch...

It's happened many time's.....Amazon mostly tells you when the package will be delivered....

They're stealing cars early in the am as people warm up their cars before driving into work!

Hi RadishRose..I just today heard on the car radio there will be a ticket if they find that people are warming up their car on the street or driveway...It will be against the law in NJ....That's if the Police
are near that home....Especially in the cold weather you will see people heating their cars and they go inside....

peppermint - They tried that when we lived in Maine. Yet on any winter weekday at the beginning of a shift, you could go to the public works garage ... or the school bus compound ... or the cop shop ... and find any number of vehicles sitting empty in the parking lot with their engines running. How does that go? "Do as I say, not as I do"?

This is the time of year when some of the drivers have nervous breakdowns or the like. I was at work one day years ago and saw a UPS truck sitting out in the parking lot with nobody in it. I assumed he was making a delivery to one of the businesses in the back. A half hour later, I looked out and the truck was still sitting there, open, running. I checked with the other businesses and they hadn't seen him.

I called UPS and reported the truck. About 15 minutes later, another UPS truck pulled in and an extra driver got out and checked out the truck. I went out and talked to him and he said that occasionally a driver will have just.had.enough and will walk away from the truck. Apparently that's what happened. He then drove off with the truck.

It was strange.

I saw on tv that thieves are getting picky, they'll tear open a package on the way to or in their car and if it's a low value item, they toss it and leave.

Cops are now implanting trackers in items in the box and have had success tracking down the thieves. But now, people are complaining that some of the items are at or over dollar amounts that would increase their penalties!

I say, so what? That's what the thief wanted; high dollar items -let them have them, along with the higher penalties!

As far as retaliation by putting out boxes of garbage to them to steal, beware of a smashed window or slashed tires in the future.

This lady chased after a 'porch pirate' and finally got her package back. More HERE with video.

The Ring video showed a woman walking up to Abeyta's porch and stealing a package. Abeyta ran outside and saw her crossing the street to get away.
“I thought, 'No way this is happening to me,'” Abeyta said.

Abeyta got in her car, parked and confronted the woman. She recorded the whole confrontation on her phone, asking for the woman’s name and threatening to call the police. As the woman took off running, Abeyta chased her down for about a minute.

“I don’t even know what came out of my mouth or even why I said what I did. It just happened,” Abeyta said. “I was mad as hell. There was no way I was going to let her go. I would have ran for as many miles as I had to to get my package.”

Finally, she got the woman to stop and hand over Abeyta’s package, which contained a Crock Pot cover.

Abeyta says it didn’t matter what the gift was, it’s the principal: no one should steal from strangers, especially this close to Christmas.

We've all seen videos of packages being swiped off the front porch. But it is pretty lame thinking that nobody is going to steal unattended packages out in the open. You wouldn't leave your front door open, with hopes that no one will steal from you.

@ SeaBreeze

I saw that story on GMA and the news. Of course I thought of the porch pirate threads.
