I served for 3 years in the guts of a carrier active in that horrible war. Needless to stay those, like myself, were thoroughly insulated from the truth of that war. After my time was up I reported to the SecNav a story I had heard about pushing a Vietnamese captive out of a helicopter in a scheme to encourage another in line to talk. I was told it was all a lie, whereupon I resigned my reserve commission, and wiped my hands of that disaster. In all fairness those in the military were just doing as ordered. You can thank civilians for that misguided mess.To all veterans, Have some moments but also enjoy the honor bestowed today even in the trivial "free pancakes" and discounts. There was a time when veterans were not honored after fighting for our country in a horrible war. THAT should never happen again.
Even when I hear for the umpteenth time "Thank you for your service" on TV etc and it's starting to sound a bit forced I am so glad that the country is making the effort to be sure that won't happen again.
I'm sure my husband will be at Ihop today. If honor comes in a free breakfast then he's there baby!![]()
