Last night,Turner Movie Classics aired one of my favorite movies,'To Kill A Mockingbird' 62 based on Harper Lee's book. I had not seen this in quite awhile. I think the movie version was even better than the book. What an all-star cast :
Gregory Peck-'Atticus Finch"-can't picture anybody else in this role
Robert Duvall'Boo Radley' -his first major screen role
Wiilliam Windom-prosecutor
Brock Peters-'Tom Robinson'- the accused
great character actor,Paul Fix-judge overseeing the trial
Alice Ghostley-'Aunt Stephanie'
Mary Badham as'Scout'
Phillip Alford as'Jem'
Kim Stanley voices the adult 'Scout'
A wonderful film score by Elmer Bernstein
The only actors still with us are Duvall,Badham,Alford
The movie won 3 Academy awards,Peck-his only Oscar winning role,Horton Foote-Best Screenplay,Best Art Direction Sue

I have never seen the movie but did read the books recently. I loved the first book, and Go Set A Watchman was an eye opener in that Atticus is not as portrayed in the first book. Daddy's little girl all grown up sees a different man.

Good book and film. I read a few years back that the actress who played Mayella was definately acting against type. She spent much of her life as an advocate for minorities and was a member of the NAACP. In fact, she and Brock Peters, who played Tom Robinson worked together in the Civil Rights movement.

I read both and still prefer Mockingbird over Go Set a Watchman. The move was great also and have watched it a few times something I rarely do.

I bought Go Set a Watchman from the bargain books at Barnes & Noble. Less than a year after it was released, which should say something. Barely got through 30 pages, and ended up putting it in my donation box.

I lived in Monroeville, Alabama for several years. Harper Lee lived there. It makes a difference when you can walk the streets and know that that court house, was still standing. Great book.

As a youth in the 60s this film really left it's mark. I read the book also (way back when). Lordy, I miss OLD Hollywood films. Nothing compares today, or very little.

I decided not to read Go Set a Watchman; I didn't want my hero-worship of Atticus to be disturbed.

My all time favorite book and movie!
I literally ran to the store to get "Go Set a Watchman",was also terribly disappointed!
There is another book,"The Mockingbird Next Door",a young journalist, sent to interview Miss Lee and wound up doing this biography about her and her lawyer sister that she lived with,it's cute.
1 of my greatest joys is my eldest grandaughter reading it in 10th grade and calling me to discuss it.
I saw on Google about a month ago that they are talking about a revival of Mockingbird on Broadway with Jeff Daniels as Atticus????????,NO!!!!!
