To Pass Or Not To Pass, While Driving

The drivers, who drive up a wall, are the ones doing 30mph in a 55 mph area. Some say they are "careful" drivers, I say if their driving ability is so precarious that they can't keep up with traffic, they shouldn't be on the road. I have no problem passing them whenever it's possible. These are the same drivers, who get into the passing lane and stay there, doing 20-30 miles under the speed limit. So everybody has to pass on the right.

Erratic drivers, I'll move over and let them get as far away from me as possible. In the case of a drunk driver, I'll pass as soon as possible and get as far away from that problem as quickly as I can. Drunk or druggie is very bad news. Report the plate to the cops ASAP.

In the Uk the overtaking lane IS the right lane :)

State law says if you are driving on a 2-lane road and 6 cars can be seen in your rearview mirror, you are holding up traffic and must pull over as soon as it is safe, to let those cars pass.
I remember doing this way back in the old days, but for the only 2 lane road I drive on these days, aside from not really wanting to try to find anywhere to pull off and back on (and trying to get back on could feel risky), I feel like a public benefactor to be holding up the cars behind me because that gives people trying to come out from side streets a bit of a gap between traffic.

I always feel so sorry for the people who want to come out when I see there was a gap in traffic on one side of the road but they can't take advantage of it because of a new wave of traffic going the other way. In my idealist view of the future, there would be traffic light drones that would fly around looking for people stuck in those situations and then the drones would fly down and make an impromptu intersection.

I am more sensible these days, but there are times when I find myself alone on a nice stretch of high, I will get on it. I like speed, but I don’t take chances or put other drivers at risk.

A few months ago, I was driving on the interstate here and there was a driver who wanted to depart at the next exit, but he was kind of hemmed in. There was another car alongside of him, so the driver wanting to exit stepped on the accelerator and cut in front of the other driver who was alongside of him. When he exited so did the driver who was cut off and he was right on the other guy’s tail blowing his horn. I thought about coming back to check out what happened, but decided to just keep driving. I didn’t want to get caught in any gunfire in case there was any.

Police today seldom do speed checks. There are various reasons for this. Many P.D.’s see doing speed checks as an ineffective and inefficient way of controlling speed on major highways. It’s also unfair to ticket someone going 12 mph over limit when there are lots of drivers going 15+ over limit and not given a citation.

Another reason why you don’t see as many speed checks as in the past is that many P.D.’s are short on help and it’s more important to patrol neighborhoods to keep the people safe than to issue tickets. And, many Officers and Troopers are busy doing investigations. Most drivers that do drive over the limit do so in a safe manner. If drivers tailgate, police will usually do a traffic stop and remind drivers how unsafe it is to tailgate. If the driver tries to argue the point, the Trooper may issue a citation. Keep in mind that most police vehicles now have dash cams and most cops wear a body camera.

If anyone receives a citation for any driving infraction, they are wise to sign it. Signing a citation is not an admission of guilt, but only that they are acknowledging that they have received it. Refusing to sign the citation could lead to further citations being issued, or arrest. My suggestion is to be respectful to the Officer or Trooper and sign the citation. You will be given an opportunity later to voice your argument before a judge.

What grinds me is when someone gets six inches off my rear bumper when I have no place to go in heavy traffic. I'm as close to the car in front of me as I can be.....where does the idiot behind me think I'm going to go or how much faster I can go?...

Many small-minded impatient drivers have developed automatic emotional bullying habits on their right feet against accelerator pedals. Rather publicly self embarrassing though because they are always isolated inside the confines of their metal box, don't feel the annoyance of drivers around them.

Regardless of whether a car in front of them is driving at a reasonable speed, or cars are in a long chain unable to pass, they cannot resist their internal behavior of always pushing any vehicles in front of them as though they are actively voting while driving that they don't like the situation and d!@# are gonna make others know about it." So it is in that sense they are small-minded, selfish, and immaturely emotional.

Another thing such drivers do on busy two lanes in each direction long distance highways (like I5 in California) with large trucks and other slower vehicles is to play games of moving into slower right lane empty stretches behind slow trucks, then racing ahead, then annoyingly jamming into tight left lane space between some vehicle near parallel to the truck. In fact in more pin-headed mindedness, without using their turn blinkers may cruise closely just behind a near vehicle in front of an adjacent lane car while ready to dangerously veer into any small space as though the driver beside them is not aware they are going to irritatingly crowd in.

Upon doing so they will then drive a bit again in that fast left lane and coming upon any right slow lane space behind a truck, will jump back out in the slow lane in order to race ahead all the way forward to where the next big truck is blocking that slow lane. This all repeats endlessly dozens of miles after dozens of miles. In the end, they drive say 200 miles and get wherever a few minutes before other drivers.

So on long drives, they have nothing better to do than to annoy others for little reason other than emotional them are unhappy being restrained so will be mean to others as they pout and bother others. They can get away playing such games for hours because there are always some drivers willing to widen space in front of them to let them crowd in. Of course, that just reinforces their habit and gives them some pleasure each time in knowing they can bully at least some others by being aggressive.

What gets me is the FedEx or UPS truck parked in the road blocking the lane when it's a double line road. You don't know how long the driver will occupied. Had that happen twice on Thursday while delivering meals on Rt 9P around Saratoga Lake. The road is so twisty, you can't see very far ahead. It really grinds my gears.
