I'm glad I read about this take-back day in the local Patch.com news.

Were I running a newspaper, this is the kind of useful news I'd want run in my newspaper.

I come across old opioid meds I toss them right away. Not letting that hang around an extra year. If a burglar gets in and finds them they could come back under the assumption I have a script for them.
 

I know. In my area only some pharmacies have a drop bin for unused meds. I think the point of the DEA program is to publicize that there's a solution, to publicize their mission, and to let people know they can take them back and dump them safely.
 
Allegedly it's not safe to dump old meds in the trash because they go into landfills and seep into the ground water supply. Likewise, it's not safe to flush them because those also go into the water supply in some regions.

I guess in some places people are still burning their trash, which is yet another environmental hazard, but still legal in some places.

DEA collected 300 tons last year so it seems there must be a need for the take-back days.
