Today in History, August 14, 1945

I was right there. Had just come out of Radio City Music Hall. Was 12 years old living in NYC for a year and got separated from the woman I was living with. Everyone was hugging and kissing everyone else. Did not know whether to be frightened or joyous.

I've just listened to an address in Canberra by Dr Brendan Nelson, the Director of the Australian War Museum. It was very moving as he read from the writings of POWs and other men and women who served in the Pacific theatre. I had heard just about all of the stories before but I still teared up listening to them.

IMO, today, like any time when we remember past wars should be a day of reflection and recommitment to the best values of our respective countries.

Lest we forget.

I was thirteen. It was a day like no other I have ever seen before or since. Just a huge, joyous, collective sigh of relief.
After four years of emotional stress and anxiety, suddenly everyone knew that Johnny would be marching home again.
