I routinely head out to surrounding small towns to buy groceries from small single-store operators or small chains of about 3 stores. Small hardware stores as well.

The local New York State sponsored farmer’s market is the best option for me.

It is getting tougher for local farmers to make a competitive offering, people who shop price usually end up at Walmart or one of the major grocery chains.
