Today's gripe

It bothers me the way some contractors string you along with excuses for not starting a job. I'm waiting for contractor to schedule when to begin work but don't call or tell me they're not interested.
Very legit gripe. Tho here i haven't had that problem--not with local guys. Haven't had anyone from city tho when i have roof redone will probably have to do so. We'll see.

What i have had an awful time with is Firewood delivery guys. The first couple of times they do pretty good but overtime they get less reliable. Some mess up from the start--not coming on first day agreed upon which if there's a sudden storm or they had a family emergency i can forgive if they would just call/text letting me know. But when the same guy has 'emergencies' every time one begins to wonder. In 9 yrs i've yet to use the same one for more than 2 seasons. The best guy started having to go out of state to work due to the economy and only home once monthly, and i felt bad about taking from his family part of his few days home.

Thing is i always call well before i've got it have more wood and all i ask is that they tell me when they can deliver--whether 'tomorrow' or a week away and then show up when we agreed or advise me asap if they can't. There are a commercial outlets for small quantities but they are more expensive and more hassle hauling small loads in my vehicle. i'm supposed to get a load today from a new guy, brother of a contractor who's been a big help to me (cleans my stovepipe twice a year for me at very reasonable price and i trust him so much i've sometimes loaned him the cleaning tool i bought for doing that so he could earn money doing it for others.) We'll see if his brother is as dependable.

I hired a handyman a few months ago, he came for a day then left without saying anything and without finishing the work. Luckily he forgot his ladder so he stopped by the next morning, only then did I find out he had to order something that wouldn't be available for weeks. I'm still waiting, but I just know that when he continues the work he'll discover something else that needs to be ordered!
About 20 years ago I moved to a different state. Three months before my move I arranged for a fence contractor to fence a paddock for my horses that would be arriving several days after me. But when the time came he didn't show and didn't return calls. I had to pay a different fence contractor 20% extra to get that one to pause his current job and do mine.
