Too many changes make me feel insecure

I know it's progress, but it seem so accelerated lately, especially with electronics. We have to keep "upgrading" computers, phones and TVs.

This week I had a tussle with my computer when the monthly updates installed a "nag" program in regard to Windows 10. Had to delete, then hide the update to keep it from consuming CPU usage. It also installed an update that runs CompatTelRunner, that also runs for a while consuming system resources. Had to do the same thing with that.

Then I learned our TV service is going "all digital" soon and anyone with an old CRT TV will have to get a digital converter form the cable company (they will not support or activate any brand but their own).

I do not handle stress well and I am not very savvy in regard to most electronics. All these changes are making me feel nervous and out of place, like I'm waiting for another proverbial shoe to drop. What will I have to modify or change tomorrow?

Nothing is stable anymore. Even if you buy a new device, progress is so fast, by the time you get it home it's practically an antique.

I know exactly how you feel about this one, debodun. I went through the same thing just this past week - we have two old CRTs and we got the notice from Service Electric (our cable people) that we HAVE to upgrade to a converter box.

On the plus side, we would get a bunch of new channels. Yay - more commercials!

On the negative side ... I tried hooking it up to the living room TV. It gave me a message, something like ...

"We have detected a problem with your cable system. Please call (xxx)-xxx-xxxx for assistance."

I don't need no stinkin' assistance!

I unhooked it and tried hooking it up to roomie's TV. Same thing. I tried disconnecting Internet (same supplier) - same thing.

Finally broke down and called. They had to "force" the installation from their office before it worked.

I think the only way out is to get rid of the tech - hardly doable at this point, right? They've already got us addicted.

I bought my flat TV in 2009, it's still working good but I too had to get one of those cable boxes. Clunky thing. I do like the on demand since I can catch up on missed programs that way.

I'm with you. Hate technology and changes. I don't handle it well either.

Satellite any better?

I've used an over-the-air box for several years and am very happy with it. Yes, there is an initial layout for the box...but only one time. I also bought an antenna for better reception. But not paying exorbitant rates to the cable company:tongue:

We had the flat screen LCD TVs before the digital switch years ago, and just stuck with our rabbit ears antenna. Got a much better picture on the TV, but where I live we always have to adjust the antenna, sometimes just for changing channels. Of our 3 TVs, two are free using indoor antennas, only one has cable connection.

You're not alone Debodun, I'm a techophobe, luckily my husband is much better with the new gadgets, I still have trouble with the TV remotes.
