"Too much" arsenic in baby food?? Why is there any of it in there at all?

Despicable.

I made my own homemade baby food when my kids were babies... homemade baby formula, too. Not only was it more economical, it was healthier, and nothing could have been more easy.

What I cannot understand is, where is the public outcry on this?

My opinion of the FDA, it should be shut down.

So long as we continue to allow and trust administrations as the FDA, garbage and poison will continue to be allowed to be served on store shelves, and in many ways I blame consumers.

Consumers wield the clout, and so if enough people stood up to this and refused to buy it, changes would have to be made, same goes for speaking up and speaking out.

If only we knew what truly goes into the making of much of the food things we eat, I'm convinced that we would be sick with disgust and anger.

I sometimes ran home cooked food through the blender for Paxton, but mostly I just fed him soft foods like oatmeal, applesauce, yogurt, etc., or mashed up some beans or pasta or whatever. I did occasionally feed him baby food when we went on a day trip, and I cringe about that now.

Yeah, the FDA is a useless expense...taxpayers paying for poisoned food and dangerous medications.

The FDA is a large bureaucratic morass governed by people with political ambition and agendas who are influenced by, if not obliged to, their major contributors and political benefactors.

I remember making homemade baby food for my baby siblings, my mom and I would use a fork to mash everything up. Took a couple of minutes and the little ones got to enjoy the same food that was served on the table.

With the advent of modern day kitchen appliances like blenders and food-processors, really, there is no need for mothers to be buying store-bought baby food.

Same for baby formula. Aside from getting lots of practice making and preparing bottles for my baby siblings, I prepared hundreds of bottles when I used to babysit back in the day, homemade baby formula and all.

A couple of minutes of time and effort, bottle was warmed in a pot of water on the stove, and baby was fed.

All of this store-bought this, and store-bought that nowadays, I don't understand it.
 
Seems like a blender or, better yet, a Ninja blender, would do a splendid job of making baby food. (Mind you, I don't know much about feeding babies, but ....)

They also don't cost much, and the baby food wouldn't contain preservatives (why have preservatives in food you're trying to digest?).

And, presuming you're buying foods/vegetables that don't contain (or are covered by) pesticides, what could be better?

Yeah, I used a Ninja. It's an older model called a Silver Bullet. I made juices for him with it, too; mixtures of fruit and veggies, even greens. And I used the juice to make popsicles for him, too. He loved it.

And yes, it's way cheaper to make your own baby food. Plus it's easy.

Absolutely, Devi, and super quick and easy.

Fresh garden grown produce, no chemicals and poisons, whatever is being served at the table, baby eats, too.

But it would seem that these things get into the food chain from the ground up. I mean, I doubt that and I couldn't find where companies are adding extra ingredients such as arsenic to their products. These things are in the soil. So maybe those "fresh" hand pureed vegetables may have even higher levels of toxins in them than what we know. I don't know of anyone who tests their vegetables at home for toxins, after all but mashing and blending it won't get rid of anything toxic. These things can also be consumed by mothers during pregnancy, thereby contaminating the baby even before it's born. Maybe this is the best we can do for now. I imagine too that baby food is made from produce that was grown on the same land as the produce that we buy in the store. Chemicals are everywhere because we "need" green lawns and so many other things that make life nice. Arsenic is a price we pay it seems.

Makes me wonder if all the crap that's getting in the food is causing social changes, like increased violence and stupidity.

I'm reflecting on store-bought prepared parmesan cheese in the plastic containers that people buy. On average it contains 7%-10% wood pulp.

Of course this is just the tip of the iceberg, but it's a reminder as to how manipulative the makers of food products are, and yet people keep buying it and eating it.

Wood pulp just might be good for us. After all, I've never seen any termites at my doctor's office. 😊

As I recall (it's been a while), for vegetables to be considered "organic", they have to be grown on land that has not had herbicides/pesticides sprayed on or applied to it (or on the land next to it), nor onto the vegetables themselves. If the land has been treated with herbicides/pesticides, then it has to be properly dealt with (sorry again, it's been years) such that the vegetables can be considered organic -- and this takes years and has to be certified by whatever authorities are working in that location.

No GMOs either. GMOs make me feel lousy.

Yes, organic food costs more. That's because it costs more to provide it, instead of spraying toxins all over it and calling it done. It is NOT normal to spray poisons all over food. That is not food. What we call "organic vegetables" today is what vegetables used to be before DDT and all the other sprays came on the market. Cheaper to grow? No doubt. Also, less good for you.

As we get older, our bodies don't function as well as when we were younger. That includes not being able to fight off the effects of toxins in food. I have a theory, which I've not read anywhere and have no link to. I just wonder if some of the ills suffered by the elderly (e.g., dementia) might be caused by toxins in their food.

At any rate, I ain't eating it.

What if the organic farm that grew my food paid a bribe to the Organically Grown Certification Team and my organic food is or was anything but. How can I know for sure? I'm doing okay, myself, so far and I feel as if I have a ways to go yet. We have the opportunity to be as old as we are. Not everyone makes it so far, even if they never have tasted anything but organically grown, Non-GMO foods. No matter what we do we don't have much control over anything. But we do control how we treat others and ourselves. Maybe the best we can do it to be kind, when possible and hope for the best for all of us.
 
Even if one grows their own food, if the next door neighbours are spraying, you’re going to end up with chemicals on the food. Nothing is a given. Still better than the imported goods.

That's been my strongest argument when it comes to all things homemade (food wise)... anything homegrown is better than bought, and anything homemade is better as well, because I know how it's been prepared (food safe/hygiene wise) and what's gone into the making of it, with no artificial ingredients or unknown fillers in it.
