Transformation of a dog

A wonderful video, Jillaroo.

It reminded me of a dog I rescued some years ago.

We were at a local park one afternoon having a Sunday School picnic and the BBQ was in full swing.
I noticed a group of dogs milling around nearby. One was a very scrawny female German shepherd and she was being tormented by the other dogs. She was also flea ridden with bare skin around her haunches.

I grabbed a couple of sausages and offered her one. She took it gently from my hand even though she was clearly starving, just like that dog in the video. That did it for me. I immediately named her Lady and with the other sausage I tried to get her into my car.

I needn't have bothered with the sausage. As soon as I opened the back door she entered the car willingly, lay down on the back seat and sighed. I took her to the vet who treated her for nothing but I did have to buy the medications that she needed. She was about 8 years old and had kidney problems.

After a bit of TLC, a course of cortesone and a few weeks of good food her hair began to grow back and she was the gentlest, most elegant dog I have ever known but I was not in a position to keep her. Fortunately I was able to find her a good home with a young couple who wanted a pet that would also provide security for the wife when the husband was away on business. Lady filled the bill perfectly and lived out the rest of her life in far happier circumstances.

When I look back on my life and weigh up the good and the bad things that I have done I always feel very good about rescuing Lady from her misery. She was a very special animal.

Warrigal, that is such a wonderful things you did.:love_heart:

Jillaroo, I haven't worked up the guts to watch the video yet. I cry easily when it has anything to do with animals.

Old Hipster, you must watch the video.
She is a wonderful dog and so are the people who rescued her.
My mum was one of those soft hearted people who were always caring for strays and I reckon that if I was ever to be unkind to an animal she would come and haunt me.

WAH!! I watched it, oh that poor dog, and poor little Frankie, they sure took to each other. :love_heart: What a good group of people.

It's heartwarming to see a sick or injured one saved, but that makes it even sadder when you think of all the perfectly healthy ones which are euthanised in their thousands merely because there isn't enough room for them.

We maybe should wonder if this flood of feel good videos around this time of year only feature dogs that will pull at our heart and purse strings and put the Foundation in a good light. Making an 'ad' video of them putting down healthy ones wouldn't make us feel so willing to donate... it's all a matter of spin.
Personally I'd prefer to sacrifice a sick one and put the money spent on it towards saving more of the healthy ones.

I'm reminded of the old Jewish joke about the woman who killed the healthy chicken to make the Jewish cure-all-ills chicken soup for the sick chicken.

I'm a push over for dogs, and not hard hearted, but I'm not soft headed either.

BTW: Did someone have a cruel streak, or a warped sense of humour, to name a mangy dumpyard dog 'Miley' ??? Just wonderin'.
