Tree vandal suspected of cutting down trees in Los Angeles arrested

Eight trees valued at $300,000. That's $37,000 per tree. That seems a bit high, and I doubt the vandal could afford to pay restitution. But what a senseless criminal act.

I agree. $37,000 for a tree?? Home Depot sells 100s of tree for less than $100. And I'm sure L.A. doesn't spend $37,000 in upkeep for every tree in the city.

Trees have value, not all of which can be measured by how much a saw log is worth. No one has figured out how to determine that value. I hope they at least take that guy's chainsaw away from him.

It took years of maintenance by the city trimming etc to get them to grow in an urban environment. They'll probably going to replace them with a young tree and not seeds. They'll have to extract and/or mulch the roots/structure, might even require concrete work.

The cost per tree is over time probably 20 plus years for some of them and the city, crews and equipment needed to maintain them/replace them. Depending on where those trees were located they probably had to send out 3-4 man crews including flaggers to divert traffic around the tree/work site every time they did trimming as they will to clean them up and replace them.

The final numbers will be closer to $350,000 or 43K per tree.

Addiction/untreated mental illness. You wouldn’t believe some of the things I’ve seen over the years at the county bike park.
