Tropical Storm Raphael headed for Gulf of Mexico, likely a hurricane by midweek

A tropical depression in the Caribbean is expected to be named today and is headed into the Gulf of Mexico where waters are still warm. There is a cold front with wind shear over the US that could act to repel it, but even so, some parts of the Gulf are going to get significant rain.

National Weather Service has an early estimated path.

Looks like Jamaica may get hit this time around. My house only got a little damage from Helene and it has already been corrected. I think I might fly down this weekend for a neighbor's 99th birthday bash. his daughter invited us to his party. If we fly down, we will leave Friday morning and come home Saturday evening.

I'm on the central Gulf Coast, east of New Orleans. If it stays on track we may get a tropical storm, but no one gets too excited about those. I think the water in the Gulf is probably not hot enough now to fuel a big hurricane. Western Cuba will probably get some damage.
