It was just a matter of time before delivery driver was killed by a thief...

Today in Leeds Northern England..
A brave delivery driver was killed trying to stop a 'vanjacking' after clinging on to the passenger door for half a mile when a thief jumped behind the wheel.

The courier, in his forties, was on his rounds delivering Amazon parcels on Tuesday evening when his grey transit van was stolen in Leeds, West Yorkshire.

He was delivering a package to a house at about 6.45pm when he returned to see a man jumping into his vehicle.

He tried to stop the thief by getting into the van himself, but the suspect drove away at speed, dragging the driver for half a mile as he desperately hung out of the door.

The silver Ford Transit Cargo then smashed into two parked cars, around half a mile from where the theft occurred.

As the courier lay dying in the street, the thief drove off, and abandoned the vehicle six miles away in Heights Drive.

Police have now launched a manhunt for the thief following an incident that has rocked an inner city neighbourhood.

Bringing back hanging may deter monsters like that highjacker.

So sad when someone who is working for a living going about theie life is killed by thugs. My heart goes out to his family & friends for their loss.

What really bothers me is that if this POS is caught, what will the system do to punish him? If, like most places, he won't get the punishment he deserves. What is as bad is that some people will make excuses for his actions & also reasons why punishment (or certain ones) shouldn't be given to him.

@timoc, I agree with you. The punishment should fit the crime that was committed.

Yes you're absolutely correct that's precisely what is likely to happen.

I'm sorry to say but one of my thoughts of this POS who started the California park fire (yes he's guilty, I don't care about a court of law, there were witnesses) that this is when I wish we had frontier justice. Take the garbage out and shoot him.

Perhaps tougher laws all around would help this thievery that is going on. This is a terrible tragic event.

Being a delivery driver didn't really seem to be such a high risk job. Can't see how the thief could predict what value might be had on the vehicle. I've often thought about the risk involved in working night shifts at convenience stores. It isn't unusual to hear about assaults and sometimes shooting in those places. Seems like when the economy puts pressure on people these crimes increase. Sadly Christmas brings on a rash of crime as well.

The "Give him a fair trial and hang him philosophy!" LOL!

today it really is... in essence you;re driving a mobile shop..(store)...which can have any amount of high price electronic items in it....remember he was delivering for Amazon

The killer probably knew the drivers route went to ritzy neighborhoods or knew something was on that van was really worth stealing.

RIP

@TennVet, I understand what you meant about not knowing about anything of value in a delivery truck. Sadly, it doesn't matter all these POSs.

Subjects like this one just decide they are going to steal/commit armed robbery/burglary no matter what. Nothing is planned out as they just act when they see a soft target to make their victim. They don't care if the victim or a bystander is killed. They know they won't be punished.

When is the last time a repeat or violent felon has been given a punishment that meets the crime they have committed?

That's why it's good to have a firearm for self defense.

If THAT was true, the USA would be the safest place on earth. Obviously, it isn't safe at all.

Jimintorono, you are making a gratuitous assertion. America is safe. The high crime rates are in the major metropolitan areas where honest law abiding citizens gun rights have been restricted. They are no longer afforded the opporunity to self-defense.

Criminals look for soft targets & these soft targets have been created by these cities giving the thugs ample opporunity to apply their chosen illegal trade. They also know these communities won't keep them in jail or prosecute them for the offense committed.

Criminals are predators who are looking for those who can't fight back. A predator in the wild won't attack another animal who could hurt & maim them. Once that happens, they couldn't survive injured in the wild. A criminal is no different when looking for a victim.

By the way, crime is on the uptake in other countries as well.

Exactly. The greatest crimes in America are in gun free cities. Chicago anyone?

Jim, you live in Canada I assume (?)...my father was a policeman for 27 years said, crime increased twice in Canada during his time as an officer. The big one was home invasions/break ins/robberies.
The first is when they forced people to use trigger locks and gun cabinets. Criminals knew you had no way of grabbing your shotgun in time. They could break in, grab a sandwich and still have time to rob you at knife point/gun point, cause they knew that 'law abiding' people had to do to defend themselves.

The second is when the govt cracked down on self defense laws. Maybe not on paper, but essentially in the courts. Unless you are inches from death, bleeding, missing a limb, stabbed or with a gun at your head, you have no right to defend yourself in Canada.

Now I am not saying guns solves all the problems. Of course not. But the fear of guns changes a lot.

If you are from Toronto, do you remember the speech by the Police Chief or some figure head in the TPD back in the 90's when he famously said '99 percent of all guns crimes are committed with ILLEGAL guns, and by people that have no regard for the law'. And they knew they were coming over the great lakes from the US. My father, all his partners over the years, and pretty much all police officers will tell you that.

Look at stats anywhere in the world. It's always the criminal element with illegal weapons that commit the crimes.
Also, if it is the 1 person out of a hundred that commits a crime who is (up until that point) a law abiding 'good' person...do you think if they are that demented to have to or want to use that weapon to commit a crime-that the very fact he has to get his keys, unlock 2 locks, that will prevent him?

I my mothers home town, 51 murders last year with firearms. Wanna guess how many were registered? Lol! Z-e-r-o. So, while I agree more has to be done to criminals who commit crimes, how exactly would any gun ban, stop the 51 shootings/murders?

Remember, guns don't kill people, people kill people.

Let us look 20 years ahead.
Anarchy will be rife. More gated communities with high security.
Will home deliveries be stopped? Maybe the purchaser will need to collect. Online stores will need to invest in warehouses across the country.
Insurance premiums will be extremely high.
Maybe whole sections of cities will only be for the well to do locals.
Do not live in the area? Not a rate payer? Unemployed?
Be denied entry to these communities.

While different delivery businesses have different things in place, it is my understanding that Amazon delivery vans are fully covered internally by cameras. These vehicles are tracked to the nth degree, so they should have really good footage of this guy.

In 2022, 9,655 murderers in the United States were Black, while 6,629 were White. A further 3,698 murderers were of another race, including American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, and Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander. However, not all law enforcement agencies submitted homicide data to the FBI in 2022, meaning there may be more murder offenders of each race than depicted. While the majority of circumstances behind murders in the U.S. are unknown, narcotics, robberies, and gang killings are most commonly identified.

Yikes, why did you post this? It's only meaningful if you look at social factors and factor in levels of education and poverty.

Yes I live in Toronto, IN fact I was born here. During a ten year period ( 1977 to 1987 ) I was employed by Metropolitan Ambulance as an Ambulance attendant AND AT THE SAME TIME I was an Auxiliary Police Constable with Toronto Police. So, yes I do have direct, personal experience in this subject of crime and criminals. Smuggled hand guns ( from the USA ) are common place in Toronto these days, I agree.

Where you and I will disagree, is the idea that having deadly weapons readily available, will make things better, in Canada. JIMB.
