Ultra-processed food IS addictive, scientists confirm

even when I wasa chid back in the 60's, my mum served us up 90 % Ulra processed foods.

An abiding memory is of Canned Campbells Meatballs, and Uncle Bens' white rice... ..or fish fingers (sticks)....

Knorr or Bachelors chicken noodle soup for lunch often...
Oh gosh! I was lucky my mom was a great cook - tho, she did not have the patience to teach me anything. I can follow a receipt but, can not cook like she did. One thing, she did like to bake! So there were always plenty of sweets to eat!

yes see my mum couldn't cook really... she was raised in an Evil Nun run orphange... so she never learend as a youngster... and my father kept her very short of money so fresh ingredeients and motivation was in low supply

She did make the occasional stab at it.. stewed beef.. which was pretty tasteless... cabbage... Mac & cheese occasionally, mashed potato ... but we kids pretty much existed on processed foods. the exception being the banana we got for lunch. ...but I think our saving grace was we never got cakes or biscuits..and rarely ever any sweets ( candy)... not did we get any Fizzy drinks...

Bless her heart and yours! An Evil Nun orphanage sounds traumatic and with all due respect, your father does not sound like a peach.

My mom was crazy and life with her was not easy, but I am often reminded that many people have grown up with their own set of hardships.

Seems like you have done well ! 🤗

Food wasn't meant to be kept forever on a shelf. With all of the crud they put into the ultra-processed foods, I'm not surprised what they have been linked to.

I remember when the low-fat craze started & all of the products that came out then. I didn't like the taste & everything seemed to me to be either sweeter or saltier. I also found out that certain foods started to disagree with me back in the late 80s/early 90s & I think it was all due to the preservatives.

I found the time to cook when I got home from work & it was cheaper for us when we were first married. I kept doing it because I didn't like the flavor of the food that was in the stores. Now the extras go into the freezer for leftovers later in the week.

Certain foods didn't agree with me anymore & I think it was due to the additives & preservatives they used. Instead of buy the frozen or fresh pie dough, I made my own. Same for a lot of the other things that I remembered Grandma making, so why not do it myself. Her food sure tasted better to me.

We buy our beef/pork from local farmers. I'm also lucky to have a bulk-food store has a lot of organic/non-gmo flours, cane sugar, sorghum, molasses & a lot of other products that we use.

When I do buy food in the stores in cans or boxes (not highly processed), I look at the ingredients to see what is it the pasta, canned goods, etc. I found Keystone Meats canned beef, pork & chicken that only contains meat & sea salt at Walmart. It's really good & is nice to have on the shelf for quick meals or in case of emergencies like if the power is out.

I do a lot of canning & try to put up enough for two years at a time when I do it. This year was tomatoes & homemade ketchup. Last year I did peach jam, apple pie jam & dilly beans & still have enough to last me until next year. Some veggies/fruit I'll put in the freeze dryer & store in canning jars after getting rid of the air with my seal-a-meal.

In the absence of any real definition of the term "ultra-processed food" I have a hard time getting on board with this.

"While there has been a lot of talk about ultra-processed foods recently, there is not yet a clear definition. Ultra-processed foods tend to include ingredients and additives not generally used in home cooking and contribute to excess calorie consumption. Most are characterized by being low in nutritional quality and high in saturated fats, added sugars, and sodium (salt). National and state organizations are currently working on better defining ultra-processed foods." Yale School of Public Health

Certain commercially prepared foods seem intuitively obvious, but each individual product needs to be evaluated separately.

I have fired all the social media influencers I used to listen to. I got my A1c down by losing some weight but cholesterol was still high. I've begun to just watch saturated fat, fiber, and added sugar and I feel better already. So far sodium is ok, blood pressure is good.
