Under or over electric blanket?

We're just coming out of winter in Australia.

This year, I decided to try an over blanket - one put on top of your sheets and blankets, instead of one of those you put under your sheets, next to the mattress.

I found that it worked really well.

Which do you use? And Why?

When I used an electric blanket I put it on top of the sheets. My body is so hot all the time now I barely need sheets in the winter.

Because my heat in my house doesn't reach my bedroom very well, I use an electric blanket. I put it on top of the sheets and then a comforter over that. If it gets REALLY cold, I'll put a regular blanket on top of the electric blanket and under the comforter.

Tried electric years ago but didn't see any advantage over doubled comforters with no additional charge on my electric bill...

I bought my first electric blanket back in the 70's. I like to sleep in a cold room. Mainly just used it to heat up the bed before getting in, then pretty much turned it off, so mine was under a cover.

The second one I bought didn't work the same way. Something about sensing body heat. It didn't seem to come on until after you got in the bed. Maybe it was just defective, IDK. Anyway I gave up on them long ago.

In our 50 years of marriage, we owned one electric blanket. My wife gave it away. If it weren't for pipes freezing, I honestly believe she would sleep with the windows open all winter long!! The AC is turned way down in the summer and the furnace gets little use in the winter. I'm about ready to consider heating bricks like the pioneers used to do to keep warm at night!!!!!!

 Sounds like my kind of gal.

When I used an electric blanket for a short time years ago, we kept it over the top sheet and under the bedspread. Some people lay on them, but you're not supposed to. I never felt comfortable with a plugged in blanket for sleep, always thought about shock or fire. We also started to just use it to warm the sheets, then turned it off when we got in bed. A nice thick goose down comforter is really great for keeping warm, or flannel sheets and pillowcases.

I put the electric blanket on top. I like to sleep with the heat off in the room, of course the hubby likes it just the opposite. I usually turn on the blanket an hour before bedtime to warm up the bed then I turn my side off.

I don't use mine anymore, but when I did, I put it on top.

They have wires running through them and, if you put it on the bottom and move around in your sleep,

you MAY break a wire thereby creating a fire hazard. Ya don't wanna burn up in your bed.

We gave up the electric blanket in the early '80s, considering that electricity was deemed to be hazardous for your health- not to mention the fire hazard previously posted. So, I found a light weight and medium weight down duvet that buttoned together for New England winters. It worked great for years then it finally just disintegrated. Wasn't able to find the same combination to replace it so got a medium weight one. I made sure each of the boys had their own down duvet to take with them. We all still use them as needed.
