Unemployment in the Gaza Strip has reached nearly 80% since the war with Israel erupted last October, the United Nations labour agency said on Friday, bringing the average unemployment rate across Palestinian territories to more than 50%.
Unemployment in the Gaza Strip has reached 79.1%, while the West Bank has seen joblessness hit nearly 32%, the International Labour Organization (ILO) said in its fourth assessment of the impact of the war on employment. The figures give a combined unemployment rate of 50.8%.

"This excludes Palestinians who have given up on finding a job," said Ruba Jaradat, ILO Regional Director for Arab States.
"The situation is much worse."
Israel's ground and air campaign in Gaza came in response to Hamas' storming of southern Israel on Oct. 7, killing around 1,200 people and seizing 253 more as hostages, according to Israeli tallies.
The Israeli offensive has killed more than 36,500 people, according to health authorities in the Gaza Strip, where around half of its 2.3 million people lived below the poverty line even before the war.

"Imagine with this very high level of unemployment, people will not be able to secure food for themselves and for their families," Jaradat said.
"This is also impacting their health.... Even if they have money, there are no hospitals that can accommodate the catastrophic situation there."
In terms of the economy, the real gross domestic product (GDP) has contracted by nearly 33% in the Palestinian territories since the start of the war, with an estimated contraction of 83.5% in the Gaza Strip and by 22.7% in the West Bank, according to data published by ILO.

"In the occupied Palestinian territory and particularly in the West Bank, the reduction in incomes has pushed many families into severe poverty," Jaradat said.

The Palestines are starving to death. I can hardly stand to watch the news when they show it. I understand why Israel retaliated of course but this is a pure slaughter at this point.

They tell them what’s a safe area to go to and then bomb that area claiming it’s a mistake. The only way the head of Israel stays out of prison is to continue the war. So it’s not a surprise that there’s no jobs. There weren’t many before the war started.

It's a horrible situation isn't it? What amazes me is how comfortable 'the world' minus a few countries, is with the whole thing.

Exactly Terry! At some point, I concluded these actions are deliberate, not mistakes. How many times has Israel told the Palestinians to "go there", "no go there" alleging these areas are safe, then bomb those same areas?! That's some BS! I can't stand to watch the news about this either. It makes me very angry and sad at the same time.

Is this a spoof article? It reads like an article from The Onion.

I'm actually surprised that you see those images on the news. On the alternate news sites I watch, it's hard to criticize Israel at all for any of this. Many of them are getting fired because of their news coverage of Gaza. Unless they are self owned Youtube channels. Although those folks are under the thumb of Youtube and so they have to be careful too.

Talking only about the source of the article: Reuters is not a spoof web site.

This story must have been written in the middle of a birthday party.

In other groundbreaking news, Ukraine is suffering from a fall in the number of holidaymakers.

I don’t find it that amazing. It’s not new.

Far more people have been killed in the Syrian civil war than in Gaza, and it is ignored. Russian makes war on Ukraine and that is no big deal anymore. China oppreses it’s non-Chinese population as well as its Chinese population and nobody fusses. Iran spends billions arming terrorist outfits like the Hoothies so they can shoot at civilian ships, and the Hezzbolah so they can displace 100,000 people in northern Israel with rocket fire. Nobody cares.

You often hear people saying that we need our stories so that we can learn from the experiences of others. But after hundreds and thousands of years of war, we haven't learned anything. It's like we're all about greed and cruelty. That Remembrance Day saying 'lest we forget' must be satire.

What on earth makes you say that? What do you disagree with? Do you disagree that 35,000 people have died? That starvation is setting in? That there are no longer jobs in a war zone where the majority of the infrastructure has been destroyed or that there are no more real working hospitals.....? I gotta ask, are you just a contrarian by nature?

Do you not find that the most ludicrous paragraph imaginable? Who would think to write such a thing? The editors at Reuters must have been away for the day. There's nothing contrarian about highlighting absurdity.

Pray share with us what is "most ludicrous" and "[un]imaginable" in the paragraph?
Could you believe that some here may find "who would think to write such a thing" about what you wrote above. ;)
What absurdity are you highlighting? Help us understand by elucidating.

I don't know what publications you've been reading but I've noticed errors in many reputable publications over the last several years. They lead me to comment about them in a thread here on the forum somewhere that I wonder why editors didn't catch the mistakes; some were blatant, some were not. So if you haven't come across errors such as the ones you mentioned above, good for you. I get very annoyed when I read them and it makes me think that journalists and their editors are either no longer being properly educated or have gotten lazy.

Oh yeah. I see those horrible images when I watch World News Tonight and Good Morning America (ABC). It is often mentioned that our administration has been critical of Israel's tactics, but are still steadfast allies. At some point, it started to seem like double talk to me. :cautious:

If it's not self-evident, then it is beyond explaining.

I'm still not understanding why you find any of that ludicrous. There were lots of Palestinians including in Gaza who had jobs working for Israeli companies. But now, Gazan's aren't allowed out to go to those jobs so unemployment has gone up.

And in the West Bank, the suspicion about the employed Palestinians has likewise gone up which has very likely resulted in rising unemployment there too. I think the paragraph is very understandable and not at all absurd.

Re Syria, wrong.
Re Ukraine, wrong.
Re the non-Chinese, wrong.
Re the Houthis, wrong.
Re the Hezbollah, wrong again.
People do care and only one topic can go on the headline at a time.
Instead of saying that nobody cares you could have acknowledged compassion fatigue.

You may never understand it, and we should accept it. It's absurd on the face of it, and from my perspective needs no explanation. It's truly a Monty Python moment. It's easily the strangest, and dumbest, thing I've read about the conflict. Seriously. You think otherwise, and that's okay. (y)

Do you always throw out comments and then refuse to clarify? What is the point of that?

Maybe they should peacefully and respectfully do more to expose the plight of people caught up in these wars. Hopefully they have learned from the foolish “river to the sea” people what NOT to do when trying to influence others.

IMO, most of the American news media is grossly incompetent if not bent. The Can you give recent examples of where I am wrong? it would be good to know.

Hamas started this s**t. It’s on them. But it’s cleat they don’t give a rat’s a** about the Palestinian people — just their political agenda.
