Unknown Vehicle parked in someone's carport.

I live in a block of flats. 10 units. Plus two other blocks of 10 units.
30 in total.
Each unit has an allocated carport. Someone parked a large 4x4 vehicle in unit's 23 bay.
Received a message from the estate agent asking who ever owns the vehicle to remove it from bay 23.
I went and had a look at the vehicle. A small side window was broken, glass on the seat, the vehicle was unlocked, the central infotainment system was ripped out.
I reported my findings to the estate agent.
They notified the police who turned up the next day.
The owner was notified, he said the vehicle was stolen 3 weeks earlier.
 

The owner was notified. Had he reported it to the police as stolen three weeks earlier? And it wasn't in the carport the day before.? Overall the thief sounds extra solicitous to me taking care to keep the car out of the public eye where it could be stripped and left in bad shape. Sounds odd to me, Maybe somebody the car owner knows but hopes it wasn't? Interesting.

The vehicle was there for about 3 days before estate agent sent email to residents.
I would assume he would have reported the vehicle stolen.
Interesting indeed.

In a similar vein........

Back in the early '60s (I was 17 or 18), I lived with my parents in their Chicago bungalow. It was winter, and a big (8-12 inch) snowfall came in. So like many of the neighbors, I got out and cleared the space in front of the house so I or Dad could park there. After doing that, many of us would put an old chair or whatever to stake our claim.

I came home from school and found an older Nash Rambler parked in "our" spot. It ticked me off but I just parked in the alley. Well, the car remained there for a number of days while the cold and snow continued. We had no clue who it belonged to, and neither did the neighbors.

Well, I thought of letting the air out of the tires, or doing some other harm but decided I could use a spare battery. So one morning I went out and opened the hood (no hood locks on early autos) and took out the battery. OK, I stole it, but that was 60 years ago so I think I'm safe from legalities.

It wasn't long after, when the weather streak let up, that a tow truck and a couple guys hooked up the Rambler and drove it off. Never did find out who it belonged to, but I do know he needed to get a new battery.
