A lot of crimes go unreported. Some women won’t report a rape because it embarrasses her and she was warned by the rapist not to call the police or he would be back or maybe even he would kill her or her family. One rape victim that I interviewed told me she “wasn’t” going to report it because she didn’t want her name in the paper. I told her that all she had to do was to request anonymity, which we do without being asked to do it.
There was a small general store located in a small borough about 25 miles North of Pittsburgh. I received a call to respond to a call from the store that it was robbed. When I got there, the perpetrator had gone. I was speaking with the owner who was the only person on duty. He said he had been robbed 4 other times, but never called the police. He called this time because he finally had enough of it.
I have more stories about this, but the point is, unreported crimes happen more often than we think.
