Unsubscribing From Junk Email

Mark as spam is better than unsubscribe, block sender beats both.
Lately I've noticed that marking "unsubscribe" generates a message to go to the website. I don't want to go to their website so I'm just marking as spam and be done with it. I don't know if that go to website is a Gmail feature, or a Firefox thing, but it's clear that whoever created that doesn't want you to mark as spam.

If they want me to make extra or unnecessary steps, then I'm sending them to spam.

"As a service to you our valued customer, we willingly will allow you to unsubscribe. But first......"

It's neither. It's a link embedded within the email itself. I follow the link and unsubscribe.

Most companies would much rather unsubscribe you than have their email addresses marked as spam. Email providers "learn" spam addresses from their customers (who block the addresses or mark them as spam) and Gmail, Yahoo, etc., start to proactively mark those emails as spam for all customers, even those who haven't personally designated them as such.

When my small business had a retail component, I used an email service (Mail Chimp) to manage sale and information blasts. When MC received a "please remove me from your email list" they immediately did so, and emailed me that XYZ address had unsubscribed so I could take them off my contact lists.

Final thought on this - if your email address was legitimately obtained by a company (you did business with them or filled out a request), it's not really spam.

If you no longer want to hear from them, it's only fair to give them the opportunity to remove you from their list, rather than damage their reputation by marking their emails as junk.

If they continue after a couple of weeks, that's a different story.

I agree, and in fact, if they are a business I use, I do give then that benefit of the doubt and simply stop after I unsubscribe.

Has anyone used all the options installed on 'Thunderbird' email manager for marking spam & successfully stopping unwanted emails? I was trying to get CostCo ads stopped & unsubscribing through Thunderbird seems they just ignore my request or it's generating more email ads. Just wondering, tried a few things but haven't tested it thoroughly time wise. Searched found a youtube video but watched it yet. Does 'Evolution' have a surefire method?

I use Thunderbird. However, if you go to the bottom of a Costco email, there's an unsubscribe link. Just click on it.

I tried that several times but to no avail. Keep getting ads from CostCo.

I checked my trash. Found all CostCo emails. Selected them, marked as spam, deleted them, They completely disappeared, May have solved problem. We'll see if anything gets through. I'll wait and see.

I go to the bottom of the junk email to find the word "unsubscribe". It's always very tiny font, and often pretty faint as well. I click on that and it just sends me to their website's subscribe/unsubscribe page. And that's all that's on that page.

Are you doing something different? I mean, are you not using the unsubscribe link down at the bottom of the junk mail?

NOPE! The link is there and I've used it every time. After I click it, it goes back to my browser & says it may take up to 10 days to complete. Nothing happens after 10 days, the darn thing keeps sending me more ads. I've done it with every single ad. Finally just gave up. CostCo is the only one I've ever had trouble stopping.

(if you want to bother,) Try going to Cosco's main website and scroll to the bottom of the main page where they list several columns of various services and stuff, and look for contact us or corporate/corporate offices or anything like advertising or publications. Maybe that'll get you to a place or actual person that can stop the flow.

I get several junk mails every day...they go to my spam folder. I glance at the headings, then delete all of them, without responding or unsubscribing. Opening, or unsubscribing, etc., just verifies that I'm here, and results in even more junk mail.

Now I feel real stupid, in my preferences @ CostCo.com I had the 2 boxes checked to receive updates & sale ads. My fault - I unchecked them, I'll bet that may have been the problem. My stupidity is questionable must be an age thing. Sorry about the posts I made before & thanks for the attempts to try and help me. My apologies to all.

LOL No worries. We've all done that. Even when we were younger.
In many cases, especially when we were younger.

Apparently, unsubscribe is not all that clear. I've gone to unsubscribe, and then been given a list of things to unsubscribe from. They will unsubscribed you, but first:

How about this?
Or this?
And this too?
Oh, you meant you really want to unsubscribe? Don't worry we will still send you stuff just in case you really didn't want to unsubscribe.

I'm not always sure if checking the extra boxes gets rid of them or keeps them coming to my mailbox.
