Unwanted refugees and asylum seekers?

As long as they go through the correct procedure when they arrive, have all the necessary documents, they are given a fair chance.
Each year New Zealand accepts 750 refugees as part of an agreement with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, whereby their status has been ‘mandated’ or authenticated by the UNHCR. New Zealand is one of fewer than 20 countries to offer a resettlement programme and has done so for more than 20 years. Even fewer countries make a commitment like New Zealand to reserving a place for women at risk, medical/disabled, and emergency protection cases within their quota. In doing so they offer a preferential option for those who are already marginalised and vulnerable, and the most difficult to place. For this New Zealand has gained international respect for its humanitarianism.

Maybe NZ isn't full up as the UK is..I thought asylum was the first country you landed in, where you are no longer in danger..The trouble is that most of them are making their way to the UK..Due to our over generous benefit system...

In the USA (IMO) there are too many people who come here but refuse to assimilate. The melting pot of the first half of the 19th century has become a salad bowl of immigrants who are here physically but expect here to be the same as their native culture.

There has been some 'trouble' over the years with suspect asylum seekers. NZ had become too much of a soft touch, the laws have since been tightened.

Interesting comment, MaggieJewel.
Have always lived among New Australians (immigrants) in Australia.
Some assimilate quickly, but some never do: High caste Indian neighbors treat us like dirt-do not accept Australian way of life!
Many of Greek neighbors have assimilated, but some still speak no English or broken English!

Don't think being an unwanted refugee/asylum seeker is much fun at all!
Why don't "clever politicians" get together and figure out ways to help countries, before the entire population runs away?

I couldn't have said it better, Maggie Jewel.
