Upside-down Groceries

And... having your groceries packed-out or pushed-out to your car and packed into the trunk (back in the day) was par for the course no matter where you shopped.

@Aunt Marg I too do not like 'concertina' bread or my egg carton full of smashed eggs
I was a 'checkout chick' 50 years ago in the brown paper bag days and we were taught how to pack groceries properly
Always always put bread or cake or eggs or softer vegetables on top never under cans or boxes
Me too from 1962-66. To me we had to think while putting the groceries in the bags because they were geometric-square as opposed to the sloppy plastic sacks today. I recall some shoppers usually the same ones, always insisted on double bagging not because they were worried about the bags breaking but they used them for garbage.

Exactly!

Yes, that's exactly what my mom did, she used the brown paper bags as garbage pail liners. Hard to believe, but they held up exceptionally well.

The difference between plastic bags and paper ?
Heaven help you if the bag got wet through condensation on frozen items on the way home. I recycle all the plastic bags through the kitchen scraps.
Oh yes, I remember occasionally having to gingerly handle a paper bag with a soggy bottom, but for the most part those old-fashioned heavy gauge brown paper bags were king.

Our city is now taking huge paper bags for composting materials like leaves and grass clippings. They go to a special area in the landfill where they are composted. Then anyone can pick up the compost and usually they are cleaned out in two or three days.

My mom always said, "At the store check-out, always put the heavy things first and the delicate things last."
I guess because the heavy things get put in the bag first and the lighter ones on top of that. You don't want a 10 pound sack of sugar thrown on top of your eggs.

Always thrilled when we get home and discover the carton of eggs survived the ordeal. Yes, I fondly recall the box boys / box girls and their pride in their grocery bagging abilities from years gone by. Wife really gets upset when they bag meat with household cleaning products. I usually request meat products be bagged by themselves, it helps to keep her stress level down. Don...

Your mom was right! Back when I still went grocery shopping, I used to organize the items on the checkout conveyor belt according to size/weight with the heavy things first and the delicates at the end, in hopes of everything getting bagged properly. My husband thought I was nuts until he just put everything on the belt willy-nilly one day and came home to discover some expensive cherries and nectarines smashed under the canned goods.

I will say the baggers at Publix are generally conscientious, though. Whole Foods? Not so much. :cautious:

Here household cleaning products are wrapped in a separate plastic bag first and then there are always two bags . Cleaning products are toxic. If they leak they can contaminate your food.

Surprisingly, meat is always automatically bagged separate, and even more surprisingly, I am always asked if it's okay for the meat to be put in with something else food related.

Ah gee I ride a bike. If you drop the can and a tiny hole appears you have to drink it. Except in the winter. I can stick it in a snow bank and freeze it till it stops. Pure genius.
Just make sure the snow is pure white. Wouldn't want yellow beer in yellow snow.
