as pandemic upends food markets

Mass closures of restaurants and schools have forced a sudden shift from those wholesale food-service markets to retail grocery stores, creating logistical and packaging nightmares for plants processing milk, butter and cheese. Trucking companies that haul dairy products are scrambling to get enough drivers as some who fear the virus have stopped working. And sales to major dairy export markets have dried up as the food-service sector largely shuts down globally.

Yes, I saw a report on that on the TV news this morning. I talked to our local grocery store manager a couple of days ago, and he said that getting food supplies delivered is becoming a real problem. Distribution centers and delivery services are slowing down substantially, and massive amounts of food, etc., are sitting in warehouses with no quick means of distribution.
 
I saw that report and it made me sad.

People lining up at food banks while milk is being dumped and crops are rotting in the field.

Wow - Sitting Bull saw a problem that we have failed to correct in all this time - very, very sad /-;
 
The huge tonnage of food the US has is more than many people can imagine! This is such a shame. Not just milk as I don't believe adults need it at all, but other products, too.
 
This is a real shame. I would think that there would be a need for this milk, even if we would ship it to third world countries. The kids and younger adults could drink it to help grow strong bones and teeth and to help strengthen their immune system.
 
Wow. And when I was at the store the other day, I saw they are now limiting the amount of milk a customer can buy to 2 per person. No ice cream anywhere and very little butter. They do have a good amount of cheese.

This is so sad.
 
On the surface, it seems like this would be a good place for the federal government to invoke the Defense Production Act to require milk producers to process milk and dairy products at cost, to be paid by the federal government, for distribution to food pantries, non-profits, charities, etc...
 
The stores have plenty of whole milk but none have any skim/fat free milk.

It is odd, some of the things they don't have and equally odd some that they do have.
