US Senior Citizens Increasingly Dying from Falls

Nearly everyone I know in the "really senior" category takes a blood thinner. Including myself. Apparently the threat of blood clotting and moving to the brain, causing stroke, is considered worse than the danger of too much bleeding from falls and minor injuries. So I guess it's a question of, as the old expression goes, choosing your poison.
Define "really senior."

There are lots of exercise videos and programs specifically for seniors and balance. I don’t practice what I suggest.

I have been hospitalized three times in the past 14 months for GI bleed while on blood thinners. The last time doctors were surprised that my PCP had given me Naproxyn for pain. Now I have nothing for pain but I could really use something. He is dragging his feet about prescribing Tramadol. I have pain from last weeks CPR.

Sorry to hear that. Please Google "medicine to protect stomach while taking painkillers".

Thanks, but I'm never ok anymore. Doesn't feel "right," I don't feel right anymore.

Your right, Gilda. It's always something. 🙄

ms gamboolgal and I have seen several relatives and friends who fell and broke their hips and sadly passed away not long after.
It just seems to happen to folks as they age.

In my work in the Oilfield, men falling was a real hazard and over the 44 year I worked - several deaths and bad injuries occurred as a result of falls.

So, in retirement we have done several things to help with preventing falls around the house.

Grab Bars in Showers and Bathtubs and also for the Toilets.

Lighting all over the house and our Stairwell. This was a major noticeable improvement as folks get used to what they have regarding lighting and if you put in bright lights - at least for us it was a huge improvement.

We also put in motion LED lights on all our Stair Steps in the Stairwell. This was a very good thing as the Stairwell was always kind of dark and not well lit. It is bright now!

When we found out #Daughter was in a family way, we immediately had a Stairlift installed as there is no way that ms gamboolgal and I would/will risk carrying our baby Granddaughter up and down the Stairs. #1 Granddaughter is now 18 months old and Grandma and her ride the Hotrod daily as we keep her several days per week while our daughter works.

We both know that one day, the Hotrod will be good for us to have. In fact - I used it when my Back went out for a couple of weeks and it was very painful / difficult for me to go up/down the stairs. So there's that also....

We have Walkers for if/when I get down in my lower back.

We have a high setting bed / mattress. So we had the Amish store make us 2 X long step stools made so ms gamboolgal and I can climb up into bed - right after I get done chasing her buck neckid around the old 4 Poster.... ha !

Here's a pic of ms gamboolgal and #1 Granddaughter when the baby was ~4 months old riding the Hotrod. Now at 18 months old, she'd got a head of hair and about half the time baby girl gets strapped into the Hotrod by herself and Grandma walks besides her as she "drives" the Hotrod up and down the Stairs.... ha ! It also shows the motion activated LED lights on the Stair Treads.

Thank goodness ms gamboolgal is still limber and flexible enough to get down on the ground and play with our Granddaughter.
