Pre-judgement

By Elsie J. Doll
As I stepped from my car parked in a space
For the handicapped, a woman nearby said
Sarcastically, “You don’t look handicapped.”
Another prejudgment, I thought groaning.
Well I looked straight at her, crossed my eyes
And said, “Well thankyou!” and I reached out
My shaky hand to shake hers. She stumbled
Back a ways, stared from my crossed eyes to my
Shaking hand and nervously said, “Uh, you’re
Welcome. I see I was wrong. Sorry.” And she
Sped off in her car as though fleeing a nut job.
I had a good chuckle over this. Too bad it all
Happened so fast I hadn’t had time to inform her
About my Essential Tremor. But it felt good to
Have stifled her pre-judgement. Why I thought
To cross my eyes, I don’t know, but it sure helped.
