USN Nimitz Class Carriers

I saw the Nimitz. I remember when there was a crash on the deck, I think it was a helicopter and several men were killed and injured, along with damaging other aircraft.

I believe it patrolled the Pacific.

My ex husband during the first part of our marriage was serving in the Royal Navy. He served on several ships, but his longest period was on the second biggest Aircraft Carrier in the fleet 7000 feet long and at the time shorter only by 6 feet from The Ark Royal..
It carried Harrier Jump jets and Sea-king helicopters and had a capacity for 37 aircraft in total.....

During a trip Stateside the crew and Captain were invited on board The USS Nimitz.. length 1.082 feet long with a capacity to carry 100 Hornets , or a usual capacity of 64 Aircraft.. and they couldn't believe their eyes. The American ship had many comforts including 5 Galleys that the British ship did not, .. even down to Coke and snack Machines on every deck, which just blew our guys away...they didn't have one single coke machine on board at all..

This wasn't the dark ages, it was late 70's early 80's.. but the British ship had no luxuries at all

Just as an aside. My daughter was Christened in the Ships' chapel on board my ex husband's ship..

The Captain was a friend of Prince Charles- now King, who at the time was the Captain of HMS Bonnington, and unbeknown to any of us, he and the Queen Mother were on a Private visit to the Hermes when it was shore based during this time. On enquiring as to where my ex husband the Captains' Petty Officer was.. they sent out for a gift .. and at the end of our baby's service.. we were totally blown over to receive a gift sent down to the Chapel of a pair of boxed candlesticks, which were signed by both HRH Prince Charles and HRH Elizabeth R

My mother-in-law was Over the Moon ( think Hyacinth Bouquet)

BIG News from VA on Agent Orange:

"VA continues to expand access to health care and benefits for toxic-exposed Veterans as a part of President Biden’s Unity Agenda for the nation
WASHINGTON — Today, the Department of Veterans Affairs issued a proposed rule outlining plans to expand the locations and time frames for which VA presumes exposure to Agent Orange and other herbicides. If this proposed rule becomes final, VA will implement a new presumption of exposure to locations where herbicides were tested, used, or stored outside of Vietnam. Specifically, this proposed rule would add locations in the United States (full list of US locations where Agent Orange was tested or stored), Canada, and India to the existing presumptives for Agent Orange in Vietnam, Cambodia, Johnson Atoll, Guam, American Samoa, Korea, Laos, and Thailand."

Hopefully there will be a comment period ( anyone can comment) at the Federal Register site.
My dead husband and I were both in the initial Class Action AO case, here in NY, long ago. He died with 3 AO presumptives and PTSD ( 100% P &T) at age 47 and I still wish he could come home for dinner. :(

Also I hope and pray that Nehmer will kick in-but I have no idea yet on that. When Beverly Nehmer et al won her Agent Orange decision, (NVLSP) 1987, it has since then affect favorably ,thousands and thousands of veterans and their survivors due to the fact that this weapon of mass destruction (AO) had given them so many serious disabilities.

Agent Orange has been and still is one of the most important parts of my life.

SO sadly missed- my husband was in Vietnam (USMC) 1965-66- Danang-dead at age 47 from AO.

I have lost a few friends from AO. The last one was about 6 or 7 years ago. It started with throat cancer and then went into his jaw. The doctors wanted to remove half his jaw, but they only gave him 2 maybe 3 years. He suffered greatly and refused the surgery and any other treatment.

He died less than a year later. At his service, I gave his eulogy. As I read the script I wrote, I had the organist play the hymn “The Old Rugged Cross” very quietly. It’s the hymn that our family has played at everyone’s funeral in our family. My eyes were so full of tears by the time I was near the end of the script that I couldn’t see the words, but I remembered it pretty closely.

That is very very sad-but I am glad you wrote his eulogy. I did that for my husband too- he had a full Military Funeral, at the National Cemetery next to the local VA, and we knew the VA Chaplin well, but I knew the Chapel would be full of vets, many with AO disabilities , and/or PTSD like he had, and some civilians who didn't have a clue, and I wanted the eulogy to reflect what my husband dealt with in Vietnam. It was with him everyday.

Luckily ( I hope I am not repeating myself on this at SF,) my husband sent in a DD149 available on line and he got his 214 corrected on a DD215, and it had many more awards, decorations, that he never knew he had, a few months before he died.

I wrote his Obit myself as well and mentioned all of those awards. Good thing I did that because the American Legion had time to get bullets ( Blanks), and get their uniforms ready. The undertaker checked his DD 215 and said he didn't have to prepare the obit himself, and had it published in the locale Newspaper.

We can NEVER forget our nation's deceased men and women who served us and kept us Free!
For me, a long term vet advocate, every day is Veteran's Day!
