You are right Diva, this is a cautionary tale. Women should use caution and maybe check crimesearch.com or other search of the person.
Maybe red flags can be seen by doing this. Chances are that this guy has a substantial record. By checking this person's record, criminal background can be checked, marital status, and if the name is true. I am happy she is o.k. but probably in need of counseling for such a terrifying event.

ETA...just for clarity I should probably have said that a member of the public can't search... ( obvs members of the police force and government bodies can)...but it's far more difficult for joe public to find out about someone's background...and not available on the internet in the same way as the USA

yes you can search for someone's name but you won't get any background info on them..unless they were a serial killer and were known generally to the world...
