I'll agree to that, spent 35 years on the truck. I had reached our county's max of 25 vacation days a year, but we also had sick time, comp time, holidays and administration time ...... so if you like confusion.... read on...
Worked 12 hour swing shifts like Jim, , but was only given 8.4 hours vacation for each "day", or 17.5 shifts a year.
If you worked any extra, you earned comp time off at time and a half and had to use it before vacation time.
Each month you got a sick day... again only 8.4 hours.
Holidays, We had the option, work for double time or free day off. IF not scheduled to work, you got a free day off to use in the bank.
Administration time... If you worked during county government shut down for some reason, weather event, you got Hr for Hr time to take off.
Holiday and Administration time Had to be used up that budget year or you would loose it.
Vacation time had a cap of 30 days, again at 8.4 hours, so on Jan 1st, any vacation time over 252 hours would roll into sick time... Many years I would roll 100+ hours into sick time
Our schedule was on a 4 week rotation with a complete week off.
1)Start on Friday and work 4 nights, then 3 days off, 48 hour week 8 hour OT
2)Next Friday you come in on days, work 3 days, off Monday and come back Tuesday for 3 nights, 72 hour week No OT, split the week
3)Get off Friday morning for the weekend, and back in Monday for 4 days, 48 hour week with 8 Hr OT
4)Get up Friday morning to a week off....
Now look at week #1 Only the Monday night counted towards OT, so I could take off the weekend, and just work my Monday night and basically had 2 weeks off.
Emptying the bank... When I retired, They had to pay me out my Comp time, 3 Holidays and 252 hours vacation.
The remaining vacation rolled into sick time and added nearly 3 years of service to my retirement.
