Video, Have you ever wondered what would happen if you accidentally put a manual transmission in REVERSE while driving?

haven't watched video yet... didn't think you could actually do that?? can't imagine the distress screams from the engine.

made me think of when my brother was learning to drive. dad taught us when we got old enough. first time dad took him out, they turned right around and came home. the car had "power brakes" and brother thought that meant you had to use a LOT of power. he got to end of block, slowed as he neared stop sign and SLAMMED on the brakes... dad was NOT happy.

so then i had to take him out in a VW beetle... manual. he has at a stop sign at a T intersection onto a road that could be busy. when he saw he was clear... into 1st gear (with very little practice you'd almost have to TRY to jerk).... into 2nd.... revved up a bit and into FIRST again!! talk about whiplash!

Forgot to mention, my husband told me a story that happened back in his high-school days, where him and a friend were out driving around in his friends Mustang, and his friend accidentally pushed the gear-shifter into reverse, and hubby said nothing happened. It was an automatic.

I don't have to wonder. Back when I was 16, and learning to drive, I did it all the time. Both my mom & dad figured they would have to get rid of a body if they taught me how to drive; so I had to pay for a driver school. I started out attempting to drive a stick. But not being the most coordinated person in the world, I put the car into reverse, while I was trying to get it into 2nd. The car makes a loud sick groan, and shakes. to a fast halt. Since I was learning to drive on the school's car ,we had to pull over and "talk". Apparently, they made cars especially for advanced drivers like me-they're called "automatics".

i think at least knowing how to drive stick (even if poorly) should be part of licensing process
I learned how to drive a 3 on the tree back in the day!

Friends and others who knew me couldn't believe that I knew how.

I often ended up being the designated driver on drive-in nights, because everyone else would overindulge in alcohol and I'd be the only sober one, and the only one who knew how to drive a 3 on the tree.

my car is a manual transmission, as are the majority of cars in the uk. Easier to control the vehicle on windy one car wide narrow country roads, than an automatic like my husband has ..if I live d soemwherw where there are miles of straight roads, I'd happily have an automatic but for now, no...

Did you see how the guy giggled and sounded like a 12 yr. old? I hope he got enough "Likes" on his Youtube video to pay for a new transmission. I didn't think it was possible, I've accidentally hit reverse when shifting before, would give a momentary grinding sound that is the car's voice saying "dumbass".

My daughter in CA, when she was in High School, threw my car into reverse when I was going 50...on purpose. Nothing much happened, yes a "momentary grinding" but scared the, dare I say, living **it outta me! She was mad because I picked her up at dinnertime from the pool to eat and do her homework and she didn't want to go.

Yikes. She's 40 now, very sweet, generous, good sense of humor, and successful. Whew.
