The iconic "Marlboro Man" was originally dreamed up to promote filtered cigarettes for "manly men" as previously they were thought of as "feminine".

Five of the Marlboro Men died of smoking-related diseases. One who didn't smoke lived to be 90.

I saw him with an Old Gold catalog; the company was giving gifts to those customers who saved coupons on the cigarette pack. I asked "What are you getting?" and he said "A Coffin."

He had a sardonic humor about cigarettes.
