On a trip to the west coast with my wife, we went to 'Fisherman's Wharf' in SF. While there I walked into a place that had vintage posters. I was creating a pool room in our basement & wanted a poster. What caught my eye was one of 'The Hustler' (1961) with Paul Newman & Piper Laurie. While looking at it a salesman walked up to give his pitch.

They wanted $800 for the poster, signed by Newman, Jackie Gleason and George C Scott. I almost bought it but the price was prohibitive. I passed, luckily & read somewhere later that Newman usually didn't sign anything. So it probably was a fake. We sold the house, pool room and all in 2009. I only hope I made the right decision & saved the purchase price.

Not the real poster, just used the image as a reference.

I had seen the movie & fancied myself as a hustler, which I wasn't. My father was closer. I met a real one, 'Richie Ambrose' in LV, much later.

At the time this came out I was more into westerns. I thought with Glenn Ford there's got to be a shootout. Glenn in real life actually was very fast with a gun. Never had got into Rita's movies much. Just a little early in my Saturday morning viewing fare. Missing was either John Wayne or Randolph Scott saving the ranch.

Ha! So did I. I went to Ames poolroom in NYC thinking I was hot stuff, and got nearly busted by the cook playing 8 ball.

Ambrose was a great player. A contemporary of such players as Ronnie Allen, Ed Kelly, and the Fusco brothers.
