Vitamin D low.....

I live in AZ where the sun shines basically every day but I've been staying in more the last several months...like everyone else (hopefully). I'm not sure it has effected my Vitamin D deficiency but I was surprised by my reading from my recent blood work. Below 10 is severe deficiency. Mine was 8.1.

I did some reading about Vitamin D, and even though I knew it was derived from mostly sunshine, I didn't know that there aren't many foods that supply this vitamin and that a lack of it can cause bone loss, HBP, diabetes, infections and immune disorders, some forms of cancer and multiple sclerosis and kidney/liver disease.

I don't think I've ever had my vitamin levels checked before by any doctor. I went back in my medical folder that I keep and there's nothing on any of them from many years ago. I also checked my husband's labs and he's never had his levels checked either. This is a new doctor to me and she seems very thorough. She told me to start taking a Vitamin D supplement.

Make sure your doctor is checking your levels also.

Unfortunately, Medicare does not cover routine vitamin and mineral check with blood work. I think it should be at top of list since curing a deficiency is so easy and can be done with OTCs rather than prescription.

I've been taking Vit. D daily for a long time and I do drink a lot of fortified milk.
I'm lactose intolerant so I can't drink milk any more. I can't eat yogurt either...YUCK! I never realized how important this vitamin is. We used to eat a lot of fish when we lived in south TX but not much since living in AZ.

My Humana covered it and the vitamin prescription. That's why she wrote the Rx so I wouldn't have to pay out of pocket.

I, and my doctor, Highly recommend a daily multivitamin pill....especially as we get older. I've been taking one daily for years, and so far, so good. I just buy the Men's over 50 at Walmart....and the cost breaks down to about 6 cents a day....pretty cheap insurance. I just checked, and these pills have 125% of the recommended daily dose of Vitamin D.

Lactose intolerant :(
I'm also lactose intolerant, but drink Lactose Free milk all the time .... Don't your grocery stores carry it?

I take Vit D 3....living in the Northern Hemisphere we don't get enough sun in winter to provide enough Vit D.. and we can't always get enough in our diets, so I take one capsule every day.. also a Biotin tablet for thinning hair and weak nails.. and 1 Vit B complex which includes.. ( B6, B12, folic acid, Thiamin Niacin, pantothenic acid, Vit B2, Inositol, PABA )

How is Biotin for nails @hollydolly? Mine are in terrible shape. Ridges, dry, bendable. Is it working, do you see a difference?

Like you, I take D3, B Complex.

yes, it does work Pepper.. I had exactly the same as you, thin papery nails, ridges , bendable , flaking, break easy.. also my hair is very fine too.. I tred lots of stuff before I stumbled on the Biotin a couple of years ago .. and as long as you take it religiously around the same time every day you'll start to see a difference in about 2 or 3 months... a read difference to your nails, and less hair breakage if you have that too..

I stopped taking it last year and after about 6 months my hair and nails were back to how they were in the beginning...

I take a high dose of Vit D weekly, and Medicare helps me pay for it.

If my memory serves me correctly, eggs have a lot of Vit D.
yes I eat eggs at least 3 times a week... so I may already be getting enough Vit D3... but just in case I'm not I'll carry on. I only take the RDA so a little extra eggs won't make too much damage I'm sure..:D

I take vitamin D everyday as my levels were low a few years ago. My doctor advised me to get 1000 units a day. I take one of them a day and my levels are now good.

Wow Rexall, don't see that name around very much!

I def need to take some Calcium, I think my bones are too soft...if that's possible.

But, my hair and nails grow good and long just fine.

Recently I had my vitamin D checked via bloodwork and it was perfect. The reason for this is I drink a tablespoon of Cod Liver Oil that naturally regulates the amount of vitamin D needed.
