Volunteering in 2024 ... does anyone

I started volunteering in my 20s, playing acoustic music (with a violinist, and a mandolin player) in retirement homes. A few years later, living rurally, I volunteered with a local food-buying club... we ordered bulk quantities of natural & organic foods from a co-op in Vancouver, and distributed it among the buying club's member households.

There was a lot of informal and unscheduled volunteerism in the rural community I'd moved to, too varied to list, actually. In the last seven years, I've been a volunteer board member of a conservation & restoration river-stewardship group.

Having worked with great people, I've enjoyed all of my volunteering.

That's fabulous, I've always wondered about playing music in care homes etc.. thinking I might do it, but I'd need to scrub up a bit on my playing.. so they don't throw cabbages at me lol...

I'm hoping if I do get to move into a busier area than where I am now, there will opportunities for volunteering..

I have volunteered for organizations but got sick of having regular commitments and often you have the same kind of drama as working. So I quit for a few years.

But now I have been on the hoa board for 3 years and am now the president. There’s been plenty of drama and issues. I also joined a senior citizen advisory board a year ago and have a year left on my term. I won’t be renewing because of issues it’s having. If I’m going to be annoyed I want to get paid 🤣.

I did that too. That was in the late 70s.

Also, have been on boards. When we retired and moved, we were travelling too much to take on commitments.

At various times I have volunteered for homeless children, American Cancer Society, graphics for non profits, church office duty, neighborhood board of directors, newsletter editor, civic association, merchants association liaison, widow's group coordinator, senior luncheons and I forget what else.

I have a younger friend who plays many senior citizen venues for profit and they just love her. I imagine they would be doubly pleased if it was on a volunteer basis. I know I always enjoyed it when we had good entertainment at our senior luncheons.

that is so true about the same drama that you get when you're being paid...it's just not worth the hassle most of the time..

I haven't. I might when I fully retire. But if there is any drama, I'm out. That's something to consider as I hadn't really thought of that but I'll bet it exists. Whenever you get people together.

I'd look into animals of course, especially cats.
