To save 4 billion bucks, hell I'd do it too thanks to our famous loophole.]

The loophole is known as tax inversion, a controversial tactic that allows a company that does most of its business in the USA to cut its federal tax bill by merging or buying an overseas company in a lower-tax country and then nominally relocating its headquarters there.

.......whereby you and I have to make up the loss in taxes.

The way their stores have been operating in the last 5-10 years around here, I wouldn't miss them if they close up completely.
They seem to be a shell of what they were back in the 90's. Their store are 99% empty most of the time, probably because they don't have competitive prices anymore, and stock nothing that you can find elsewhere. A sign of the times.... trying to compete with big box and Internet.

I just don't "get" Walgreens. They charge one and 1/2 times to twice as much as Walmart & grocery stores do for the exact same products. Can't imagine why anyone even goes there. Tried getting my Rx's at one because it was close, & they have a trick of saying they don't have enough of whTever to fill the whole Rx so you have to make another trip into the store, & maybe make some impulse buys. So I moved them elsewhere.

Can't agree more. They are a shell of what they once were. Their sales stink. You need one of those cards to get just about any sale price which can be beat elsewhere. I don't see how they stay open with some of their prices. To me the biggest thing is that stupid card. Not everyone wants to sacrifice privacy to save a dollar or two.

"At some point, how much profit is enough?" is the ending question of the article and it just is so true of many, many companies here in the US today. They sacrifice sometimes way too much in the name of profits. Layoffs are now so common. I think Walgreen's will have to think about this and decide whether to focus on the bottom line and the hell with the impact on our economy or to actually choose to contribute to the US in terms of tax dollars and local jobs. I also think these are questions we can ask ourselves individually - I see many people who just do not want to pay those taxes. Personally, I always think of paying back and contributing.
