Walk Down Memory Lane

Do you remember when chicken was so expensive we only ate it at Xmas time.
Who can remember the jelly blocks before jelly crystals came out.
I remember fighting with the neighbours as to who would get the bakers horse manure from the road.

Mum used to give me sixpence to to the cinema up the road and with that i could buy a choo choo bar and get into the cinema
I used to be able to play outside for hours and my parents never worried that something sinister would happen.
I could buy a bag of crispy bits from the fish & chip shop
Biscuit were bought loose from the tin.

I remember when folks used to leave their sleeping babies in the carriage, parked outside the stores, without worry of kidnappers or any harm coming to the child.

I remember when I was young, and my mother was a normal housewife and home with me all day, taking naps with her in the afternoon...many times she was asleep before I was. :love_heart:

I remember going out for a day of fishing with my family in my father's small boat, we always caught a lot of fish, laughed a lot, and after my mother would prepare us a nice fresh fish dinner, we all relaxed outside together, tired from our long day.

I remember sitting on my Dad's lap while he smoked a White Owl Cigar in summertime, and kept the mosquitoes and gnats away from us...loved that smell, and it was only in summer. :sentimental:

Daddy worked an odd shift that meant he rose in the wee hours of the morning to work and came home around noon or shortly after. I remember that it was he, and not our mother, who was our 'keeper' after school. She worked regular hours full time. Daddy was very active, and most days had us and other neighborhood children playing ball or some other activity. He did not like for us to sit in front of the 'boob tube' as he called it, but sometimes we got away with it.

I remember having the run of the town on our bicycles. We behaved because there was always someone out there who would report to our parents if we didn't.

I remember being given pails early summer mornings before we went out to play. We picked blackberries along cow pasture fences. We had a housekeeper who would turn those berries into a luscious pie by supper time.

Summer evenings were fun. We played games outside past dark while our parents sat on the porch. We captured lightning bugs in glass jars. We captured tadpoles and watched them turn into frogs.

We skated a lot and got a lot of skinned knees. Our skates were the adjustable 4-wheel ones that needed a key to put on and take off. We kept that key on a string around our necks.

I grew up in a small Idaho town where everything was pretty safe also. Parents let us roam all over town with our candy sacks on Halloween, and no one ever worried that there might be something hazardous given to us. I especially loved the places that handed out home made cookies or fudge, instead of the usual candy bars.
On Saturday afternoons almost all of the kids went to the matinee show at the theater. It was a whole 35 cents to get in, so with a fifty cent piece , we could have a popcorn or candy bar while watching Randolph Scott galloping on his horse. If we wanted to stay and see the movie over twice, that was fine ,too.
Vaccinations were given out at school if the parents asked for them. Most of the kids didn't get one, and we hardly ever got sick. No one even thought of giving shots to their dogs or cats back then, and they rarely were sick either.

Mum & Dad bought a 2 bedroom home and there was 6 in the family so us 4 kids were set up in the dining room, it looked like a dorm with all the beds lined up, we had some great pillow fights. :hair:

My brothers and i every July would start collecting empty bottles so that we had money to spend at The Royal Melbourne Show in September, the bottlo would come around and count them and pay us accordingly , i loved the show as we all got free sample bags that had minutures of the groceries you buy in a store and we could use them to play shop with, my favourite sample bag was the licorice one, there was always heaps in the bag and my fav was the licorice blocks yum.
