Walking

Our neighbour has a son who lives about 300 yards away on the same street in the village, but in the 10 years I have lived here, I have never seen either him or his wife walk that short distance. They always drive! They seem perfectly fit and healthy, have jobs, but I have never seen them walking except to and from their cars.

Unless it was absolutely pouring, or I had something heavy to carry, I would never dream of driving such a short distance. Maybe it's a generation thing.

Maybe it is generational but it is probably just that people are so used to now using cars, that they no longer consider distance before reaching for the keys.

I use my car less and less now. Maybe once a week to go shopping some distance away. It is that weekly shop when you fill the car with bags. During the week, I will walk or cycle to my local shops a few miles away if I need anything urgently. Longer distances, I tend to cycle now.

300 yards or so, that is ridiculous! I walk half a mile every day to buy a paper ( unless it's pouring down.)Half a mile back again of course!

Ossian, I've been wondering -- what does your signature line mean?

I don't think I would drive such a short distance either. If I go shopping and there's a few stores I need to go to but not much to carry, I'll just leave my car in one spot and walk to the stores. I know some folks drive from parking space to parking space in the same lot, seems too much trouble for me. Of course if you have health issues with your legs or back, the steps might not be doable.

I don't think it;s a generation thing, more just a habit.

I can remember one time in the 60s I was in my car with the engine running before I realised I was only going next door but one, and no, it wasn't a remote moor in the Highlands but a military estate on the Moray coast!

I spent many years living in Florida, and one of the first things I noticed was the lack of footpaths, or pavements as we British call them.

If I wanted to walk to the nearest mall, I had to stumble through grass verges, stepping over drainage ditches, that sort of thing.

America is built for the car driver, the Harley, or if you are more brave, the bicycle.

Whilst on vacation in the "Keys" last year, I walked four miles round trip for a coffee every morning; then came back, showered , and took a taxi to an Irish Pub 2 miles down the road.

Yes, gib. Once or twice I have wakened up in the elevator of my condo building, or under my dining room table, in my closet etc. At least I don't go walkabout outside. Lol.

Do you still live in an apartment and do you lock the doors to your patio at night? Isn't that how Chris Hyndman died? If you've sleep walked a few times, be careful. We would rather not hear a news bulletin with your name in it.

Your neighbors may appear fit but if either of them have Rheumatoid Arthritis or other condition then 300 yards could be very difficult. Don't be quick to judge.

Lon, they're both around 40 and pretty fit. I think we can discard physical impairment. As I said, in 10 years I have never seen them walking this 300 yards. In contrast, Jocky, who at 93 is the village's oldest resident, still walks round without a stick.
