Glad to see their raising their salaries a little bit. http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2015/02/19/387470609/walmart-gives-500-000-employees-a-pay-raise

"Some 500,000 Wal-Mart employees will soon be getting a pay raise. Starting in April, the company's full- and part-time U.S. employees will earn at least $9 an hour, at least $1.75 above today's federal minimum wage.

The pay boost will also apply to employees of Sam's Club, which is owned by Wal-Mart.
The retailer says wages will jump to at least $10 one year from now."

When I was working for WalMart a few years back, I earned $5.50 per hour to start. Later I got raises of $0.10 per hour every so often. I believe I was at $6.00 when I had health problems and had to quite. I was working for half time rates as I said I would not work full time at my age.

So now they are saying all would get at least $9.00 per hour so I think that includes all half time and full time workers. I don't see any top wages and back then cashiers were always paid much better than the rest of us. I am sure also, that those that studied for management jobs made a better wage also and likely today as well.

Question on hours worked, well for some time now many of the jobs were limited to part time hours up to 30 hours per week, and very few were actually allowed to work full time and up to 40 hours per week. Now with this announcement I guess I have no idea if they are keeping to majority are part time only or if they will reinstate full time for all positions.

In these days of work shortage, I think the part time hours are help a lot of people to at least be able to make a few dollars a week. Much better than a total shut down from work. If work was really plentiful WalMart would not be able to hire part time only folks as they would all go to the better paying places.

Could be true for you. They are talking about the new hires and lowest paid in this special bottom of the ladder raise. The rest will also likely get a bit of a raise too, after they make this initial raise and get it to work.

If the number I found of 150,000 are the same you use, you are right.

Lets face it,Walmart had this pay raise all planned long before anyone was talking about it.. They knew all about the FREE publicity that came with it.
They just waited for the right moment to show they really are the good guy.
How do you think Walmart got to be where it is today?

I think it might depend upon the age group of employees you're referring to. Younger, single-parent workers may end up paying more for childcare and transportation, then have a third of their check put to taxes. In the end it becomes a difficult choice - I was at that point early in my marriage. We had a son in daycare and my wife's part-time job barely covered the tab.

For seniors most of the time it would be a different story.

Well, there's one thing for a fact, $9 and $10 an hour really isn't much into today's economy. That would still mean going to the Dollar Store and stores like it. When I was single/divorced, I made that kind of wage working in warehousing, shipping/receiving and stockroom. I made it because I drove an older vehicle, rented a furnished room in a house, cooked and took my lunch to work a lot. I also didn't have a college degree or certification. If I would have had both of them, I definitely would have made more than that.

Keep in mind, those $9 dollar and hour rates are just the starting rates. Over time the rate keeps sliding up the scale to better wages. This is just to get above the minimums that the fed and state governments have put on all employers. Long term we can expect higher prices all over the place and beyond WalMart too.
