Ran to Wallyworld this morning and when I was ready to check out, to my amazement, the only 'real person' register was the quickie one (10 items or less). The rest were the self check out things. Man, I would of thought this time of year Wallyworld would think that perhaps there are more customers and not everyone is comfortable with the self checkout lanes. Amazing.
P.S. I am a lover of the self checkout lanes, just wonder who makes these decisions.
 

I'd guess the bottom line...raising the minimum wage seems to have started an enormous amount of these situations.
Price Chopper is a major grocery in my area and I have noticed in my last 3 visits there are no express lines,there are regular and anyone with just a few things is directed to the self-checkouts,where there is 1 employee "directing traffic " and solving problems.
Not a fast food fan but have been told that 3 of the 4 McDonald's in driving distance have gone to an automated ordering system with just the people that assemble the orders working.
 
I have issues with Wallyworld, already. But they were the closest store that had computer ink. I went through the self check out. When I got to the door bells were ringing. The clerk checked me, and it was the ink that set off the "electronics". When I got home, I found out the ink was these thick plastic boxes. They needed some kind of magnet to open them. I wasn't wasting time going back. I found that a screw driver and hammer works well.

Awhile back had bought a little over 200.00 in groceries, got to the door and the alarm went off,an employee started picking up bags and checking them...had gotten out of a sick bed and was in no mood for her shtick, handed over my receipt and told her if she intended to have me stand there while she inspected every bag she could go get my money back,the offender was a box of cold/flu meds that hadn't been demagnetized!!!

You have a mighty strange Walmart.

I can checkout at Customer Service, Electronics, Automotive, and Pharmacy. Only Electronics has a scale for weighable produce, but if I use Customer Service, they run over to a register to weigh it. The quick lane takes up to twenty items, but I've never had a cashier refuse me if I had more, often many, many more. Walmart isn't just about price; it's about great customer care.

Yup. We were told that the self-checkout had some number of items that could be run through and then you got the 'assistance needed' screen. Yes, it was something like 6 items before we needed assistance. We went through with a full shopping cart and the assistant pretty much needed to stand next to us to keep us continuing to check out. Thing is, it didn't used to be like that. Programming was changed for an unknown-to-me reason.
 
I don't care for the self-checks unless I just have 2 or 3 things. Kroger has remodeled their stores here and most are "U-scan". There always seems to be an issue.

I was told they haven't eliminated many jobs but cut the hours of their cashiers and baggers. Just as bad imo.
 
Don't you guys have the receipt checker at the door like Sams and Costco has? First time I got asked for my receipt the guy had to hold my packages while I searched through my purse and then through the packages looking for that stupid receipt. My comment to him was, "Oh, I'm sorry, I must be confused, I didn't realize I was at Sam's." He didn't say a word.

As far as checking out at customer service, jeez, the lines are so long there, if I had to do that, I'd just not buy the item.

I agree, if they knocked 5% off of the total for using self checkout I would put up with the aggravation.

The last time I attempted to use a self checkout was at Walmart and the assistant did her best to ignore me so I left the items at the scanner and walked out, the greeter at the door seemed to get a big kick out of that!

I'm beginning to embrace Towanda!!!

I sent an email to Walmart corporate once complaining that I was tired of being checked at the door like a criminal and they actually sent me a $50 gift cert. I haven't actually seen them checking receipts at the door for a couple of years now. In fact, the alarm goes off and nobody seems to pay any attention to it.
 
Well. Unless you have a card like at SAMs and Costco they have no right to ask to see your receipt after you have checked out.

With a card you have signed an agreement.

For shoplifting they are supposed to catch you in the act.

Well no. Until you 'leave' the store you can't be charged with theft. They detain you outside the store .

At the door? You can always turn around and go back. No theft.

What I meant by catching you in the act is on surveillance camera or actually see you stuffing something in your purse or pocket.

Mere suspicion doesn't cut it.
 
I don't like the self check at all. I feel like I'm taking a job away from someone who needs it. Also the self check here won't let us ring up alcohol so that can be a downer too.

The self check outs that I use leave a lot to be desired. They rank right down there on the "Customer Service Meter" with automatic answering systems that businesses use for their phones... in the "curse to humanity" range. LOL
 
Gee I just love the self check out. If I miss something like a quart of milk I can always go back and get it instead of having to stand in line again.

I just make sure everything I want has a bar code or a number code on it.

We are allowed to check out beer but have to produce identification for age.

There's a guy standing there all the time so no problem with that.
 
As I have said, I already have issues with Walmart. I bought a flag, which was on the hanger, with the price of $9.97. I figured out the tax and had the exact money in my hand. The clerk rang it up and it was $14.97. I went back and grabbed the entire hanger, which were all mistagged at $9.97. The clerk immediately gave me the $9.97 price. I thought that was strange a clerk could void the $14.97. If a clerk in my grocery store makes a 2 cents mistake, it's a big deal. They need a manager's key to void. So your thinking it was just a error on Wallyworld's part. I went into another Wally 20 miles away. Just for the hell of it I checked out their flags. Yup, there was a hanger labeled $ 9.97, with $14.97 flags. Wally's policy is now the price at the register, NOT as labeled.
As to the ink, I went through the line without incident. When the alarm went off, the clerk checked my receipt. She said I could go. Since I don't shop at Wally's, I was unaware of those plastic boxes.
