Wandering Shadows & Other Tails

Three years ago my daughter found my Shadow, if you can call a wandering rather very active four legged friend by that name and after three years of rather interesting challenges he is now finally truly a shadow...... most of the time.
With 30 acres of woodland to wander in and much more beyond this has not always been the case. I have spent a number of hours at the back door yelling 'Shadow, Shadow COME' to no avail only to have him come wandering back in his own glory own time, but he does always come back, at least once with the snap collar from the leash still attached!
We have now reached the point where I feel comfortable just letting him out the back door off leash during daylight hours, which much to his delight and mine are now increasing as each day passes, and he always come when called …..... eventually. Its a long run from the back eh.
Recently he found an old deer bone jaw and has been busy giving it a good bone crushing and it keeping close when not in use. Dad is not permitted to look at it however although I am normally permitted to take other less tasty stuff he finds back there from him without too much difficulty. The last couple of days he has brought the dwindling remains into the back porch / mud room however when I open the door to let him in the house and I just say 'No' he puts in down and comes on in.
That to me is the sign a true friendship.

I have written extensive tails of his early days on another forum that I may re-share some of here later along with other ramblings, feel free to get your feet wet in my pond

Interesting couple of days, I am not exactly the smartest keyboard operator or computer tech so when my web browser locked up just after doing strange things I thought my ancient computer (win7!) had finally died. No, the old girl was still working but had to totally dump the browser I had been using and load a different one I already had stored on my system, up n running now as you can see.
But it struck me whilst fighting my way through all this and reentering all my password, including as yo see the one for here, how does an old fogie like me upload a new browser when his browser aint working. I can just imagine the panic by cell phone users when no signal for any length of time ….at least I aint got that problem, no cell, just a line from the road that also quits every so often LOL.
Anyway in setting things back up I found that another forum that I previously shared a bunch of puppy tales (tails?) and forestry trials and tribulations had totally disappeared along with my previous ramblings. I had a while back saved most of my stuff right here on my home computer but in more recent years not my forum stuff, hell it was getting to the point where I could not find stuff on my home computer let alone in the web out there in the either!

Thats all for now, going back to searching that lump of meat above my shoulders....

After more searching around I found my previous thread Managed Forest update Ontario buried in the system here, now how does one keep it handy on here in a long list if you have not posted to it over the winter? LOL

Ground white here this am with an inch or so of fresh snow down overnight and minus 9c to start as I let Shadow out to 'do his thing'. See forecast says warmer later in the week but rain rain rain.... my fault as put the rider mower battery on charge yesterday ready to put back in!

Dont think we will be mowing grass anytime soon however but once it starts to green up it going to keep this old boy busy for a few hours on a regular basis.

As a friend said upon being told what I had done .... 'Spring Fever'! However I now start to wonder how much of the ambition will turn into action and how long any action taken will last before the old bones say quit.

Just sitting here thinking about it tired me out, so thats all for now!

The unbridled hate and intolerance of individuals that are different from us in looks or beliefs on this pile of dirt we call earth has been around for thousands of years its just now it spreads so much quicker.
In the 1200s it took a few days march to spread a few hundred miles and months to spread further, then with faster ships and better communication it came down to days. Then came the telephone and eventually the ability to talk directly to those hundreds and even thousands of miles away, in more recent times came the internet where even the most insane trouble maker could spread their lies world wide in seconds. Now we have organizations gathering and saving the opinions of a broad variety of mankind and making it available to any and all at the click of a keyboard button.......

Unfortunately in our desire to be 'fair' and encourage 'free speech' we seem to have reacted the point where those in power, be they good or bad, are now able to have a much larger audience to spread their views. Like many on this forum and elsewhere I too have become addicted to checking not only what our friends here have to say each morning but also visit a number of sites to get an update on what is happening both locally and world wide. It is a habit which I am starting to think is not good for ones mental heath however I am not sure that the 'ignorance is bliss' outlook is any better.

Look at it this way when a couple of the most powerful 'leaders' finish 'saving' the world these speedy means of communications may even give us time to bend over n kiss out arse goodbye. I can think of other news I would like to hear in that department but will not voice it here! Sorry, I wish I could be more positive but...........

I don't know what happened but until this moment I didn't see the older posts on this thread. Are the Gremlins messing with things they shouldn't mess with?

I might be wrong about this but you should be able to go into your preferences to highlight posts you want to keep track of. This forum is a bit different from the one we're used to so I fumble around a bit looking for stuff.

Shadow needs to go find some good burrs so his human will give him a good brush out. Get rid of that dead Winter coat. Beyond that he's a lovely boy. And turning into such a great companion.

You know how I feel about things. Hell, you knew that when I asked if you wanted a roommate last year.

You might want to look into getting a tracking collar for Shadow. I used one on my big boy because he wandered off at times. I could check my phone and see just where he went. Called "FI". It does cost in the U.S. about $20 a month. Well worth the peace of mind.

wow - should have but didn't know they existed - if my dog gets loose who won't necessarily come back for a long long time and I have no car to track him and live in a forest anyways?? - hmmm??

I was aware of them but like yourself live in part of a forest and after 3 years now trust Shadow to say close and come when called, do however put him on the chain before dawn and after dark so he is really liking the arrival of spring. I am still waiting for the rain to stop and the temperature to get a little better than +1c before I go out n play!

I avoid collars on my dogs when they're out and about. I had one I couldn't get home after calling for hours. He finally returned, sans collar. He was hung up somewhere. Another came home without his flea collar.
