My parents didn't impose curfews, per se. If I was later than expected what could I say beyond an apology for worrying them by being late? They knew I wasn't out robbing banks, getting drunk, doing drugs, or getting laid - time simply got away from me. Turned out DH's parents had a similar trusting philosophy with their kids.
With our children, DH & I followed the template of not having curfews. We'd ask what time they expected to be home and it was nearly always midnight-ish. We'd remind them that if they were going to be later, they needed to call.
Why no curfews? Simple. In our own youth we watched friends drive recklessly in order to make a curfew or there would be hell to pay - as happened to a number of posters above.
Our kids didn't cause us to mistrust them, nor had DH or I with our parents. Since most that age had curfews of midnight or 12:30, gatherings broke up at a reasonable hour anyway.
p.s. My father could be difficult, abusive and controlling on some fronts, but quite understanding and reasonable in others. This was one of the areas where he shone while my friends' parents were unrealistic and controlling.
